You've wasted way more time & money guessing and throwing parts at it than you would have by paying a qualified mechanic to diagnose your running condition. Just saying.
Yep, I've had enough of this truck. I'm having it towed to a shop.
But just for future reference and knowledge, how does one bypass the resistor wire? Obviously you can run a relay straight off the battery, but is there a cleaner way?

That was one of the things I mentioned early on, you need a full 12v or more to fire modern ignition, the 10v is fine for points but not for the HEI you had initially, and depending on the coil & plugs you have now might not be enough. What I did was run that 10v ignition line to trigger a 30 amp relay, and then pulled 12v off the battery to the relay, so the ignition system gets all the juice it wants.
[QUOTE=351Cleveland C4;14010519]Ok, after I cooled off I decided I'd buy the pertronix and give it a try.
First thing I'm doing after I go down and get my truck. Bought it and a new coil. Taking a timing light, vacuum guage and everything to do a tune up too.
Well guys, here's a quick summary of what's up now,
all lost power has been restored. My low end is stronger than ever and I've got a much better midrange and top end with the 4 barrel and intake.
With the pertronix in the dizzy it runs and starts smoother than ever before.
Today I took my exhaust manifold off, cleaned it, used a new gasket with hi temp copper rtv on both sides and the flange connector. It seems to have cured my exhaust leak.
I'm assuming I'm still down 2 cylinders, but I have not confirmed it yet. As smooth as it is now, if I didn't know it, I'd say it was fixed. If I pick up 2 more cylinders, that's close to what? Another 75HP? counting for the added combustion and reduced drag internally. This truck will be a raging bull! I can't wait.
A guy I know has his own shop near by. He has offered to help me out on numerous occasions. Although he's mostly a Chevy guy, he does a lot of work on all kinds of classic and exotic cars and is good at it what he does. I'm going to take it to him and see what he can figure out and see if we get any farther. That should happen within a couple more weeks. And then if he can't figure it out I've got a number a friend gave me of a old hot rod guy that's "the best there is". So this engine will either be fixed, or doomed for life within the coming month
Hold on folks, it's all starting to come together!
Mystery solved!!!! (Maybe) I took the truck to said guy today, I pulled in and he figured it out in under 5 minutes. The culprit???
Wait for it......
Burned / screwed up valves!
He noticed immediately that it was sucking from the tailpipes. He stuck a compression gauge on 4 and 7 and I was blown away shocked when it only hit 60psi! So I've got another set of heads from the previous engine that I'm gonna take to the machine shop and have rebuilt. Then set aside a day ( or maybe two in my case) to swap heads.

Hopefully, you're not taking them to the same guy that "rebuilt" the last set.
