I started er up and let her idle. ( she idles now) for about 7 minutes it was running normal, then started doing it again. ( it's the classic movie breakdown sound, knock sputter knock knock die)
I wait a minute and start it back up, runs normal again.
Ok so since last post the problem seemed to have went away. It was running about normal so I took it out for a drive. I left it in first gear and drove a couple miles at different Rpm to see if i could find the problem. It runs worst between 1500-2000 rpm. Above or below that it did ok.
In the last half mike of my little test drive, the problem returns full force, coughing sputtering popping backfiring kicking knocking and dieing out.
Imma pop the top off my carb and see what I see. I'm thinking maybe I got a jet plugged up or something.
But it might be ignition related too cuz my tach is freaking is out when it happens.
You've wasted way more time & money guessing and throwing parts at it than you would have by paying a qualified mechanic to diagnose your running condition. Just saying.
I had a screw that held the points down get under the breaker plate and
do this. Took for ever to find it as it was that way when I got the truck.
I knew the prob was with the dizzy so I took it out and was taking it apart
when I found the screw. Just a thought. And putting in an electronic exciter
would not fix something like this.
How are the bushings in the dizzy? Any side play in the shaft?
I just ordered myself a pertronix kit. Even though I don't believe it's the points right now, I suppose it could be.
It's a completely intermittent problem.
As often as you keep changing parts out it's ez to over look the small little things. Like loose or frayed wires in the dizzy. Or a bad dizzy wire to the coil that looks good on the outside of the insulation.
But all in all if no problems found then, I can only think of one more thing. You were born on Friday the 13th.
orich
Good. Now it's developing and we are getting some place. Pour a small shot of gas down the intake. If it starts and runs better for a few seconds than I would say it's fuel delivery.
If it don't start at all then prolly flooded and check for spark. Should be a bright
blue spark at the plug or plug wire.
Let us know.
