The ball joints seemed ok, everything was pretty tight. One had already been replaced - the driver's side upper had a grease fitting on the bottom (that was completely not accessible, and the passenger's didn't. I noticed that a while ago when i first hit them. The u-joints looked good too, but i do have a slight clunk somewhere underneath when i slow down at low speed.
Side exhaust is cool, but..........no matter what anyone says, skinny pedal pushed down on a diesel is gonna roll coal.
I have seen, played into, etc the great debate about black smoke. Black smoke is good. Black smoke is bad. Smoke means this, that, bad tune, wrong injector match, whatever.
No argument that black smoke happens.
I just dont think you want it going up the side of your truck. IMHO.

The performance tune from SCT outta the box is pretty good. If i'm at zero boost and nail it, ****loads of coal. If i'm even the slightest bit into boost and give it the boards, almost none.
I've seen both sides of the argument too. One tune place specifically said they don't do smoke tunes, so don't even ask. "They're pointless wastes, bad for the truck, and gives people the overall impression that truck guys kill the planet" (sic) lol.
But, removing a muffler is going to have zero impact on rolling coal. And having it shoot out the side 3 feet forward from where it already shoots out isn't going to ruin my world. It's a black truck, and I wash it occasionally. I'm afraid of having a black wheel lol.
I thought about just re-using one of the bends around the axle to just make a turn-down. That way I can shoot Prii behind me, not just next to me. Either way, I'll be recycling bends from the factory pipes from the muffler back.
Bonus points for one with a 'save the planet' or 'earth day' sticker.
Seriously thinking about getting the prius repellent sticker... The whole truck is getting painted after i do the rust removal, so i'm not concerned about a short term sticker on the paint as a gag.
So it looks like fun projects are going to be put on hold... I have a transmission leak, pretty steady... I've put in 6 qts in the last week and a half. Seems to be coming out of the bellhousing, maybe a TC or front pump leak. *****.
And I cracked a brake line when i dropped the muffler. The passenger's side rear one was rusted at the clip on top of the diff, so i'm sure it would have gone anyways. I threw a bolt in it the distribution block for now until I can call that Wade guy for a new line.
Craig, that sucks about the tranny. Maybe you'll be spared the 3rd event. You need one of the stickers that Steve, the NJ chapter leader made up. I still need to put mine on the truck. It say's "Drive a Prius, I need your gas"...LOL

Thanks Pat, ya I'm hoping to dodge the 3rd bullet.
And I've seen that sticker before - it was on a Mustang
I like the one that says "Still less Carbon Monoxide than your Prius" (it's true - but sort of misleading - Diesels don't really put out much CO anyways lol)
Cut off exhaust, hit a brake line and broke it. Discovered a pretty serious (quart a day!) transmission leak. Replaced brake line. Transmission leak went away as quick as it came; dipstick's good, no more leaking. Very strange... I also upgraded to a set of American Racing wheels with some BFG 285s... Needed something for the coming winter, and who doesn't love a new look every so often?
I did learn however that my right upper ball joint is toast, causing about a degree and a half of negative camber, and some significant toe. I straightened the toe out short term until i can replace the ball joints and realign it.
If it isn't one thing, it really is another right in line behind it lol.
Truck looks great. You need some warn premium hubs to go in those nice chrome wheels! I took my ranger to get inspected and te hop told me I had a bad ball joint. I replaced all ball joints, tie rod ends, and coil springs. The looked at me like I was nuts. I told them I only had to buy 1 alignment this way ;-)
