I read that post. My dealer in SLC, UT really digs the filter. They also sell the SCMT. I asked them before putting on my exhaust, they were ok with it as long as it was installed correctly(necessary hangers to keep it from hanging on the turbo)
I wouldn't let that keep you from improvong your truck's performance. They have to prove that an aftermarket accessory caused the failure.
My concern is not the everyday driving as I don't beat my vehicles and I maintain them meticulously(sp?) but in the event of let's say, the cam sensor leaving me on the side of the road and needing to be towed to a dealer, then what? Now that I've changed it back to stock already, took me all of about 20 minutes after work today, I'm really wrestling with putting it back on. "If" something should fail and I do need a tow, what do I do, tell the driver I need to take it home first and then to the dealer? NOT! I don't have the best of luck sometimes either. I may call a couple dealers in the area tomorrow and ask the service reps the "what if" questions I have. I'm wondering if I were to get towed to a dealer and they see the air filter, would they make a note of it that would show up on some sort of a history on my truck at other dealers? I don't know, I'm shooting in the dark here. I REALLY appreciate any and all opinions and past experience you good folks are offering, keep them coming!
I totally understand where you are comming from. How if you get stranded somewhere - and the truck gets towed , and you have "aftermarket" parts on it.
When my Excursion had 3000 miles on it - the trans took a crap about 25 miles from my house , and I had to have it towed to the dealer. At this point I had a AFE air setup , and a superchips tuner in the truck. The dealer went straight for the aftermarket parts , of course , and I told them that if they could prove that a airfilter and tuner messed up my trans. then I would pay for the repairs. Well , they couldnt , and they fixed the transmission under warranty. And They got a call from the head Ford rep . after I called and complained about their service , and had my lawyer call them about the aftermarket parts act..
It is your truck , and I am not going to tell you what you should and should't do to it , I am just saying , I wouldnt worry about the dealer all that much....
I went through similar feelings when building the engine for the vette. Only with no worries of a dealer, stock or modified, trouble free or troublesome. I ended up doing it modified and I haven't regreted it yet. At least I'm becoming proficient at this filter change if I do have to swap it out. My thoughts were if I did go to the dealer with "any" mods, they would turn me away without a second thought but I see a little different perspective now. Kind of like, innocent until proven guilty, they have to prove the mod caused the problem.
There have been several users that have used PVC 45* and straight sections. I'm sure it is much cheaper and easier to work with. I planned to coat mine so I chose steel.
I had PVC piping when I was running my AFE intake , then I switched to all metal and the pitch of the turbo is much higher now , easier to hear , possibilly echo'ing thru the steel and out the filter.....
But I was thinking maybe with the heat I'd be better off with metal. I ended up having to buy an exhaust pipe from a truck supplier and cutting it for $15.00 so my whole cost was $55. I'm thinking I'm going to put it back on and keep an eye on it. One thing I DID notice when I put the stock box back on, it's definately NOT air tight, there are some small spaces here and there where it snaps together. So, my way of thinking, with the new NAPA filter secured tightly, it HAS to filter the dirt and dust better than stock even thought everything in the stock box has to go through the filter. Thanks again to all that posted opinions & experiences and a SPECIAL thanks to pcwirepro. The tuner is going to have to wait a while, THAT mod scares me yet. I'd have to go with a pyrometer and from what I'm reading, exhaust and some other things. Not yet, not just yet.
Not sure on the exact price . Like I said eariler , i had my headers and exhaust from my Pro-Street Nova coated and I think it was around $200 bucks or so , so I would think the two small sections of the filter tubing wouldnt be more than 100 bucks , or maybe even less..
It is called ceramic coating/ high heat coating. The best know place that does this is a company called Jet-Hott , but they are known for taking their sweet time. Look in the phone book of your area , and look under coatings , or in the automotive section. Or stop by a local car show and start asking some car guys , and you will find your place.....
Tymar Performance is Dale's company that makes this filter setup that this whole thread is about. The list of filters above are ones that can be made into a "homemade" system that allot of guys are running....
Hey I got done putting together my home made set up.....got the filter from napa and a mandrel bent piece of 4 in. exhaust about a foot long. that elimanatind the stock air intake tube and got a boot and clamps from my buddie at Freightliner.....fits and looks great !!!!!!
QUESTION.......what are you guys doing with the intake air temp sensor that was attached to the lower part of the air box...I have the early 99 with the pre updated airbox....thinking of just adding some wire and attaching it to the air tube????
thanks guys Frank
