Yes they were telling the truth. Not to start any arguments by any means but I believe you've read that post out of context.

A little history behind the 94-97 powerstroke air filter housing may be needed - In the early years the filter housing were very prone to leaking & the plastic holddowns wouldnt seat the lid correctly. A recall was issued but it was only for a limited time as a free replacement which provided a 'updated" lid with more internal bracing & new metal hold down bolts. Now its a purchase item.
There has been many many discussions & thoughts put towards the design of a better system to help keep from "dusting" engines which was fairly common on these models.
My disclaimer - I dont sell anything but am a satisfied customer of TYMAR - I too built my own homemade open element setup at first & tried a few different things but I ended up with a TYMAR.
feel free to browse my truck pics to see some of the changes I've done over the years on the 95 PSD I own.
im with cookie. i have a 99 powerstroke and just ordered a tymar intake. i havent got it yet though. i had an air intake on my old ranger and as soon as i put it on i noticed a diffrence in power and sound. i also have one on my cobra and man does it sounds good. noticed a power gain in it also. IMO i think its a good mod.
Does your homemade tymar intake perform as well as the uh.. not home-made tymar intake? is it basically the same filter and such? Did you notice much difference in performance? One last question, what new sound does it have...someone in another post said the tymar gave a great sound...? thank you all
The filter is the same so the filtration will be the same. I used the factory intake tube(not smooth inside) so others may flow better.(non-issue in my opinion) as for sound, there was a major difference. I can hear the turbo spool up and stall much easier than with the stock box. Definately an improvement in performance. All that aside, my reason for upgrading was to prevent any dirt from entering the engine "Dusting" that is not uncommon with some of the factory air boxes.
Once you get the Tymar installed you'll never want another intake on your truck. It's simply the best available on the market. Anyone who disagrees simply hasn't tried it or seen it first hand.
Does the stock intake tube work fine? If you wouldnt mind sending me those part numbers id greatly appreciate it... what else is involved besides removing the stock intake box etc? thanks
Napa Filter= #6637
Constant torque clamp= #7051538
1- 4.5" long piece of 4" diameter exhaust pipe or electrical conduit. My pics show the factory filter minder installed in the pipe. Don't bother, it was only for show.
As far as the factory intake hose, I think it's fine. You can buy a 45* piece of 4" exhaust pipe and eliminate it all together.
What is turbo stall? What does it sound like. I know when mine starts spooling up. I can hear the whistle increase in pitch and volume but I am unfimiliar with "Turbo Stall"
these part numbers.. are they from NAPA? or where... also is your filter mounted anyway.. or is it just sitting in that spot? Could i weld a braket to the metal tubing and give it a solid mount? thanks
