On a diesel, fuel equals power. The "throttle" controls how much fuel is fed into the cylinders and the air is drawn/pumped in accordingly. That's why diesels will not create the amount of vacuum that a gasser does.

So , if going " Lean" doesnt happen/matter on a Diesel motor , would it make sense to mount the Air Intake Temp sensor somewhere out of the engine compartment to make the reading as cool as possibile ????

Would this actually increase performance ???

The cooler the air, the denser/heavier it is. The ECM might be calibrated to dump more fuel under these conditions but I don't know for sure, I have never seen anyone's results from this type of tinkering. I'd think that mounting it close to the air filter would your best bet.

I hot glued gunned mine right under the center of the filter to the base of the filter housing since the whole housing would not come out as it is 1 piece with the battery holder. 2002. the filter barely fit!

That's a good question. If the programming is there to add fuel based on OAT, then it should make a touch more power . I know some gasser type folks use a resistor in the IAT sensor to fool the computer into adding fuel, but again, I don't know if the programming is there on the PSD.

I don't know if the added resistance from lengthening the wires enough to reach outside would help/hurt anything or not.

I am curious to hear if moving the sensor to a "cooler" location would do anything as far as power wise goes ?????

Hey have any of you guys ran into this ????? might be a coincidence but right after having new exhaust and installing the tymar setup at the same time now I get this rough type idle...like its missing especially on a hot restart for several minutes....and when pulling my 5th wheel this weekend it would intermittently surge when getting back on the gas?????? Im running the stock computer program currently .......I might install the factory air box and drive it again...still wondering about the intake air temp sensor??? is the exhaust and intake messing with the stock computer program....do I need to reprogram it or chip it??? thanks Frank

I did a little research on the air temp sensor.

Intake Air Temperature Sensor

The IAT signal provides air temperature information to the PCM. The PCM uses the air temperature information to operate the Exhaust Back Pressure (EBP) system and to determine the cold idle setpoint. During long idle periods at cold ambient temperatures, the setpoint will increase engine rpm.
Going by this, I think it needs to reflect, as close as possible, the actual ambient temp at the filter.

Frank, disconnect your batteries or pull fuse #9 on the drivers fender to reset the PCM after you do any mod. Fuse #9 for my '95, I hope it's the same for a '99

So from what alanscott found out , moving the air intake temp sensor to a "cooler" location will do nothing for increasing power.

Thanks for the info........

Just to stir the pot!

While at the World Ford Challenge I found that not one of the Diesel trucks at the event used a paper filter. All had some kind of oiled element. At least all the ones I got up close to.

Any comments?

Will-

How did you adapt your filter minder to the homemade pipe? That is the only thing i still need to do. i dont like it hanging there not hooked up.
