I did this mod over the weekend with the filter set up from Napa nad a 4" piece of exhauste. I kept in the truck for about ten minutes, then replace the stock air box and filter.
I could not handle the noise of the turbo when I let up on the pedal.
I guess this is the turbo stall sound?
Any way it sounded like the thing was coming apart.
I then proceeded to to the from grill and cut two 3" holes by the air intake.
SO I have a filter for anyone who is interested, wthe the 4" SS pipe too!
I did notice that the hood comes down directly on top of the filter limiting the amount of filter that is "useable" or no covered by the hood liner.
Has anyone got a way to keep the turbo quiet ith the Napa filter arangement?
Formernortel, just a thought or two. That open Fram probably flows 275% more flow than the stock filter. Like me, you may just be changing to the open type filter to get a better sealing filter for cleaner non leaking connection not performance per se. I have not tried it but I would think that you could change the characteristics of the open filer, restrict it and still have a filter that flows better than stock and seals good like the round clamp connections do. Or, you could do the pressure return to the inlet addition that some say reduces the effect fi you are looking to augment performance.
I get my Tymar probably the end of this week. I am going to install it onto my stock truck engine. If I get the noise and it is not what I want I am going to take duct tape and put a wrap around the element and reduce the surface area, test it and do that until I get down to about 50% of the surface area. It should do two things, cause the inlet velocity to go up and the inlet volume potential to go down. If 50% doesn't do it then I will do the outlet retrurn hose mod. The latter should reduce surge which is really micro flow reversal. Slam that outlet shut, get off the throttle quick does that, then there is a move to the left on a pressure volume curve where there is more pressure in the blower outlet than inlet volume potential to keep it in the outlet, flow reverses into the blower rotor. Why don't you play with it a little, might be a happy medium there for you somewhere. Good luck.
Thanks for your reply, that sounds like a really good idea, to restrict som of the flow. I had not thought of doing anything like that.
I really want to help this engine to breath as much as possible.
THis coming week I will be installing a 4" exhuast and the pillar gauges.
I am allso running the 80hp STMC program as well.
My thinking with the change in air filter will help the motor with the new pipe.
I tow a 9000LBS travel trailer, so everything is geared for that

I said that the noise itself , wasn't a bad thing. Sience it is noticeable on a brand new PSD. It is obvious that when the Boost gauge starts jumping around their is a issue that needs to be addressed , but this was not the topic at hand.
Does anyone else notice at certain times there is a fluttering sound in the intake. It sounds like turbo stall that stops and starts intermittenly. Like a wah, wah, wah. Just want to know if this is normal or something to worry about.
I got my homemade tymar setup in tonight. Man is the turbo loud. I dont know if i can get used to it. I didnt see any major fluctuations in my boost gauge or anything abnormal besides the sounds it makes. Barely got the hood to close. I feel like it has slightly more power but i am not sure. I did confirm a little dusting in my intake from the afe setup. I didnt believe that anything could get by the afe setup untill i pulled the intake all the way off at the turbo and saw it for myself. EGT`s are the same and the noise almost sounds like a lot of wind noise coming through a window leak or something. I have decided to give this thing a try for 1 month and see if i like it. Didnt notice any flutter. Just noticed that it is realy loud when the turbo inloads that air when getting off of the accelerator pedal. Let me know if you guys are experiencing the same things i am, and that it is normal for the tymar setup?

But what kind of affects would there be with the intake air temp sensor reading much warmer temps being more exposed to engine compartment heat than normally reading cooler air in the airbox.....would it be better to lenghten the wires and mount it someware cooler ???? I know generally the computers rely on inputs from all the sensors to optimize performance!!!!!!!!

I have been thinking the same thing about the Air Intake Temp sensor. If the sensor gets mounted somewhere cooler than the air actually going into the motor , the engine could go into a lean condition , which is not a good thing.
I would have to say , mounting the air intake temp. sensor as close to the air filter would be the best, As I did on my truck....
