I don't work for or sell anything for any company. I am also not plugging Tymar, but, I have recently spent $110 on a Tymar open air filter assembly for my '99 PSD and it works great. This is my first performance upgrade and I can tell a huge difference in turbo lag and responsiveness.

I recommend it!

He wasn't referring to that, he was referring to your slamming others because they build something themself. If it was all about buying and not "doing", this site wouldn't exist. I guess its the difference between the guy who builds a solid V8 and the kid who slaps a fart muffler on a Honda.

the kid who slaps a fart muffler on a Honda.
I hate those things. Truck died at an intersection the other day, popped the hood and, you guessed it, a civic with a fart tube was stuck up in my home made intake.

I doubt the AFE flows more air. Why would so many people be making the switch from the AFE to the Tymar or similar homemade setup? I've never heard of anyone switching from the Tymar to the AFE.

I guess the flow bench lies. Dale can quote numbers and its gospel but not visa versa?

I understand the point you're making and I agree to some extent. All aftermarket products are hyped. I tend to go by the "seat of the pants" test.

We had one individual zealously hype the Tymar to the extent that he was almost removed from the site. The moderators saw it happening, I saw it happen and some users saw it happen (and complained to us). When one person posts 90+ posts about 1 product in a month and a half, slamming everything else, it tends to build momentum. For example, people still swear by Slick 50. Its why I said the results were somewhere between both companies claims. The primary reason some switch is because they feel the AFe flows more dirt. I haven't seen results for dirt flow by any independent lab for either product so I don't know the reality for this claim one way or the other.

Dusting and airflow balance is the only reason i switched to the tymar. I am fairly sure it filters better than the AFE but, not sure it flows more air than the AFE. just dont want any dirt in my system and still more airflow than stock. I just dont like the noise the tymar makes. But function comes first. The AFE is still in my garage and the loud tymar is staying on for now, i guess!

Question tymar comments, use this thread

Got a question on flow bench comparisons between the two....Tymar type filters and AFE's Are those test #'s for flow on the whole air intake and not just the filter element????...like the afe setup with the stock lower airbox ducting from the front of the truck...or the tymar sitting open in the engine compartment???? just courius.....thanks

I've never heard of anyone switching from the Tymar to the AFE.
Mine currently resemble's a little bit of both. As some of you know I ditched the big baldwin element a few weeks back in favor of a high flow S&B filter. The initial results seem to point to the slightly smaller oiler flowing more air (measured by a small reduction in towing EGT's, nothing more.) Soon thereafter, I decided to find out for sure if non-underhood air made any differance, soooo...

I took the filter "bucket" portion from the stock airbox shaped it so it would cradle the filter, and in the open lower portion of the bucket I ran 4" PVC piping out through the newly expanded Zoodad hole. Creating a functional ram.

The difference's between an AFE and mine are 1. Mine doesn't seal to the hood, and 2. I use both a larger filter and larger ducting than an AFE.

I've never had an AFE; FIPK; Airraid, or any other cone filter/stock airbox setup. I do know that the Tymar setups will flat destroy any stock replacement element (I've had paper, oiled gauze, and foam. No contest), but I also know that my current butt-ugly homemade contraption has lowered my WFO throttle EGT's on the hot side of my chip by a solid 150 degrees.

I always have been, and will continue to be, a big fan of the Tymar type setups, but I can out flow it.

I have no intention of arguing/debating with anybody about what they prefer. These are just my findings FWIW.
