No RTV on the valley pan gasket. A blob on all fore corners if ya use the rubber ones for across the back and front. And I always do. The RTV when put on thick can and will break down and leak long before the rubber gasket will. Don't try to out think the Ford guys that designed this. They went the cheapest and easiest way already. Think about it. How many of us really know more about this stuff than the guys that made it. Git the whole kit and use it all. Yes the rubber gaskets are a pain to put in. But if ya set the intake on straight down and don't slide it around it will work. Try it on an FE. It takes most of us old fat farts a cherry picker to get the intake on and of. It Is A Heavy ****.
I have never been able to use the rubber end gaskets on a 351M/400 with an aluminum intake, they were to tall, they work great on the factory iron intake. I always put a little rtv around the ports for extra insurance.
Yes I think I remember something about that. It's been a long time and oh so many manifolds since. You are prolly right with the after market intake. I do remember two sets of the rubber ones in the kits back in the day. One set thinner. And back in the day the aftermarket intake came with the proper gaskets. But not now days EHH?
Ok so if and when i get the kit, if it has the thinner rubber ones i should use them?
Also when i was at Napa pricing some up they said to use the stock gasket kit, they said that that would work with the aftermarket intake. I assume they know what their talking about cause the guy that said it was a pretty old guy that i had to go to to get some info about my carb.
now i gotta figure out where i put my carb gasket... Haha.
you can't use the factory intake gasket with a aluminum intake..you need a racing type from fel-pro or edlebrock...you don't use the front or rear seal only the side on the heads..you use silicone on the end..front and rear....what you need for the ends is called right stuff..it's what all engine builders use..also go to edlebrock web and down load the torque spec for the intake...
hope this helps

Thanks. Would it be easier to order them online? I don't want to have to argue with the guy behind the counter at Napa. I know he will say something about it. Everyone does.
outlawbob may be right Dylan. I am not sure. I am and old dude also and we aint always right. It does seem to me that I used off the shelf Fel-pro gaskets on aftermarket intakes. But it was like 25 years ago. Old people forget and things change. I am sure there is a different way to do a lot of this stuff than the way we did it Way back then.
Haha, yeah. I just want it to be done right the first time. I don't mind buying from the parts place but i know if i say, "i don't want to use the stock kit i want the performance one" they will ask why and drag it on. I don't know though, i could just go to oriellys and order it there.
I tried reusing my valley pan, it took 3 times to get it to seal properly, what a pita. Still, to this day (until I read here) wasn't sure if I was suppose to use valley pan + gasket because of how much of a pain it was.
the felpro valley pan gasket with rtv on the ends works just fine with the aluminum intake. I have done dozens of these on 351M/400 engines and 460s and never had any problems. Never had to special order any fancy gaskets. You can also use factory ford torque specs, works just fine.
Thanks guys for the input. I don't know if i can get just the valley pan though. I would also feel safer with the rest of the gasket too, my last RTV job wasn't very good.
EDIT i was just looking at the site 2 store shipping thing and it shows there is one pretty much as far away as Napa is (referring to AutoZone) So tomorrow if i am feeling better i might drive up there and see.
