My only issue with the IH pump is if it decides to crap out when you're in ANYTown USA and the nearest auto store only has a factory replacement.
then bolt in a OEM pump and buy a new OEM lower hose and get back on your marry way? as far as i see no real hard mods that cant be reversed on the road...

Sure if the auto store has all the hoses and bolts you need. They may not have all the parts needed to go back to the "factory" pump. I mean anything can be ordered if you don't mind waiting.
did we ever figure out the best bottom hose to use of the IH water pump? I remember there were several brands/types tried but for the most part non were exactly right for the deal..
I was going to finally get around to doing the water pump this summer and getting parts ordered to do this.
Yes, I did a lot of research because I have the IH water pump and if I could not get one from Diesel Site (very expensive anyway) in a hurry when on the road, I wanted a suitable alternative without having to band-aid fix it.
The one that I found to be the best fit and readily available is the Gates 26517 2" to 2.25" like in the link below. Being as it is a Gates hose, there are a lot of sources that could get the hose in a short amount of time if it was not in stock.

Agreed, and if worst came to worst you could probably source a suitable replacement from a big 3 parts store with the Gates number to cross reference.
I have built a list of parts and the best place to get them that typically fail on the 7.3. This way if I am out and about and need something, I don't have to spend anytime at all finding what I need. I can just go to my list and order/purchase the part.

Here are some photos of the re-routing of the heater hose from the top of the old pump to the side of the new pump. The length of hose required is 3.5ft.

I'm in the middle of collecting all the pieces for this swap, and I believe the IH short thermostat is the same as the OBS 94-97 one. If so, that makes it a lot easier to search for replacements and different temp settings. Can anyone verify this?

I seemed to have answered my own question. The very next search I made after my last post was for the Stant parts catalog, and within it I found this info:
The 14252 205° thermostat is OE for 1995, while the 14259 192° thermostat is OE for 1996-98, according to Stant.
EDIT: Originally I searched the Stant catalog for 14252, but then I decided to search for the 7.3 L Diesel in general, and I found that the 14259 thermostat is the Stant equivalent for OE for all 7.3L's from 1996 to 2003. So apparently the short stem will fit our Ford aluminum water pump as well, which I guess makes sense. The 205° thermostat was listed as OE for the 1995, with the 192° as the Heavy Duty Thermostat. Based on that info, I'm getting a Stant 14259.
