Mike, I'm not poo-pooing what you did. Don't misunderstand my post. I'm just saying, even though it was a very enjoyable read (who doesn't love a thinking-outside-the-box modification) that because I can do an OEM water pump with my eyes closed, I wouldn't necessarily try this one on for size!

Aren't there quite a few folks putting aftermarket coolant filter setups on their trucks while running the HD ELC? This is the same concept. You get a heavy duty pump, move the hose out from in front of the HPOP and you get the filter in a better spot at the same time.
I understand brother. You don't need to justify to me. I'm not knocking the mod.

I'd do it again knowing what I know now...
And in all honesty, and I'm being very serious here, I'd let you do it for me if you lived closer and I needed a new pump!

And I would do it for you...but, there would have to be good BBQ involved.

I didn't think you were knocking the idea/install. I enjoy the discussion as much as anyone when it comes to aftermarket mods. Not everyone sees the need for some things or has the same capabilities. I just rebuilt my first turbo, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I might have found myself a new hobby.

As a follow up, you will need to cut off 1/2" to 3/4" off the BOTTOM end of the Gates hose to keep it from rubbing on the tie rod. Mine was just starting to chafe a little bit at the stock length. With the little bit chopped off, it clears the tie rod by 1 1/2" and no rubbing.

Looks like its doing its job. You wouldn't think it would be that bad in the system. I can see why some pumps wear out so fast.

Awesome write up. Found out my pump was leaking, then found this thread along with a few others. This one is the most detailed for the pump I have found yet. Ordered most of the parts to do the conversion. Thanks Nicmike.

Just changed my coolant filter a few weeks ago and had sand falling out of the filter after only about 3k miles. Did it because my bottle got a crack and figured why not check the filter now while the coolant it mostly drained. Word of caution to the next guy that does this mod though, you really have to get that bottom connection of the gates hose on, mine fell off and I lost about 5.5 gallons of coolant in about 10 seconds while in stop and go traffic. Scared the crap out of the little car in front of me because there was a sudden wall of steam engulfing their car when I stopped behind them.

Now that you are catching all that sand, that heavy duty pump should last a very long time. I need to change mine again just as a precaution. 20k on first filter, and now 10k on the second. Hopefully, all the sand is out. Had to buy a new radiator. Plastic fitting up top for main hose cracked and fell apart on me. Plastic got very brittle...

Unlikely it's sand. More likely it's precipitate drop-out.

The chemicals that make up the anti-cavitation erosion part of the coolant eventually agglomerate and precipitate (fall out) of the coolant, and it looks like sand. It travels around the cooling system with the coolant, and tends to eat away at the water pump seal. Then, leaking coolant washes the lubricant out of the water pump bearing, and it's all downhill from there.

Filtering the precipitate out of the coolant lessens (by a lot) the wear on the seal, and prolongs the pump's life significantly.

So don't worry about the sand, just filter out the precipitate.

As long as you're adding SCAs, you'll develop precipitate, so keep it up, even if you believe all the "sand" is gone.

Well… A day late and a dollar short, story of my life. Replaced my WP with a new OEM but I did install the sinister diesel filtration setup about a week or two ago. Nice write up!

Pop, I have heard a lot of people talk about sand before. Are you sure it cant be sand?

The 7.3 is a sand cast motor, and reportedly there is sand left in the engine after the casting.

I am using CAT EC-1 that is a non-SCA coolant and last a lot longer. It just happens to cost $25 a gallon. I just lost over 4 gallons while driving through Seattle area over the weekend arg.

Yeah, same here on the EC-1 coolant, so no drop out from any SCAs. Looks and feels like a fine clay/sand substance in the last filter. Not sure why you are losing coolant? Did you cut a piece off the old hose to use on the lower inlet of the radiator as a bushing? I'm paying about the same for a gallon of concentrate...$25.
