I've been looking very closely to the oil cooler and the pictures below show how VERY important the O rings are when sealing the coolant from the oil area of the cooler . The cooler has a machined ring around it in the front that seals the coolant from the oil chamber .
This machined ring is "tack" welded in 3 spot around the cooler. Since this machined ring isn't welded all the way around the O ring needs to seal properly or the coolant can go over or more importantly "under" the machined ring and enter the oil chamber. Take a look at what I mean.

Great pics and explanation. Like the shot of the paper slipped under the ring.
Ok my O rings will be here later this morning. Here's my plan of attack and looking for approval on the plan.
Replace O rings ,little clean oil on the O rings and press together
Reinstall cooler ,block heater and all hoses
Fill cooling system with distilled water (or coolant) ?
Install oil filter and 15 qts of oil. (i'm gonna use Motorcraft Super Duty 15-40 oil)
How should I proceed after that ?
Just start it up ? Just turn it over and not start it ? Then start it ?
Just for the record . It raining all day and yes the trucks in my driveway
I like the distilled water idea but I would get 4gal of the cheapest 15w40 oil I could find to put in first & 2 FL-1995 oil filt. After you run it enough to see if problem solved change oil & filter, drain the water & put 4gal of the ELC anti-freeze top it of with distilled water. Good luck BTW maybe wait & do it tomorrow, you gonna get a wet a-- today LOL

The ELC is the red colored one that is fully charge with the additives needed for diesel engines good for 300- 600k miles. That stuff you have there will be fine but keep a check on the SCA levels, I don't think it meets the minimun right from the start.

I believe that's it. My suggestion is to get the concentrate because you'll never get all the water out & you wind up less than a 50/50 mix. BTW I got mine from a Cat dealer

Ok Thank you very much for the help.
I'm heading out to get all my stuff and hope I get a break in the rain.
Great idea. I wonder if I can do that from the expansion tank ?
I thought of cutting one of these in half and hose clamping it to the mouth of the expansion tank ? What do ya think .
