It just depends on what stage of the game you're in, and how big the job is. If you're bidding on a job that requires the commitment of lots of employees, equipment, and can tie up a significant portion of your cash flow, then it's better to be cautious and stay in business. If it's a small DIY type job, or the money amount is small, then the risk is greatly reduced, and you're right, bidding it may not be such a bad deal.

My experience is if you get 30 - 50 guys bidding on a job, then you're just wasting your time putting your bid together. Think in terms of you have to pay your people every Friday, regardless if you've gotten a check on the job yet. How much time, resources, and personal cash are you willing to invest to get the job?

Did you just call me old?

I never had kids that liked barney Thank God but blues clues was the bomb. No steve didnt die..sheesh he just moved on to bigger and better things.

My kids were never into anything for the most part. I never bought them everything in one character. Made no sense. Heather did have a beauty and the beast collection but it was more for me than her. It now sits in 23 massive Rubbermaids in storage.
now I feel like I gotta find a pic to put in here......

No. I called you older than 16. Didn't think that was offensive.

And there's the difference. Most bids we're putting in on are somewhere between 3 and 14 bidders. Depending on the size of the job.

The small jobs have hordes of bidders. As the size of the job increases the number of outfits capable of completing the task at hand decreases making it more worth your while to put in a bid regardless.

Stuff like that is really dependent on the area and the type of bid it is. The smaller the number of outfits capable of doing the job the more worthwhile it is to turn in a bid if you are capable of doing the job.

We made a killing on some septic system installs because there aren't many septic installers willing to travel to where the jobs were and there were even fewer locals to that area who were licensed installers.

I bid State and Federal (Military) contracts all the time. READ THE PAPERWORK, AND UNDERSTAND IT! Of course since Im bidding perishables and sustanance, and not durable goods the process is a little more streamlined. I have gotten hung out before b/c I did not see the fine print that stated that "the cost is not to exceed" and my cost did exceed. I had to file a market fluctuation request, and it took another 3 months to get the last $4000. The Military contracts I deal with pay within 14 days of my fulfilling their order, and they pay by Gov. credit card, so I dont have to worry about giving a cash discount. I am supplying food for 2 National Guard units (total of 500 ppl x 3 meals a day) for the next 15 days for a their annual two week training here in Alabama to the tune of about $60K. That figures out to about $2.66 per meal, and they get good stuff.
