try the spray on tire cleaner, pete

they also have a spray specifically for making black plastic trim pieces look good as new

How To Clean Plastic, Vinyl, Rubber Trim & Molding

I was actually thinking about trying tire black, but we didn't have any around.

I got a little polishing compound on the fender flares and it just didn't want to come off when I was washing it.
