Hey everybody.....happy Saturday evenin to ya. I'm headed to work, but just wanted to let you know I just uploaded a new video to youtube, posted it in another thread on here....check it! I'm outta here....the train's A'comin!
so guys how are they with kids? cause we live in town, lots of kids in our neighborhood.dont' need anybody getting bit.
Like any animal, its how you treat them. Key is to research the parents, actually see them both, get the pup at 8 weeks, no sooner, no later. Labs can be excellent with kids... Lots of good books out on labs....but most things dog related transfer over breed to breed. If you want the dog to be more than a kid's pet.... research the hunting lines as well. There is a big difference between a dog that will retrieve and a h^&*% of a retriever...Labs do best with 1 master..... and then you have to be sure the dog knows it's " place in the pecking order". I recomend the book water dog before buying a lab.

Thanks LEO,I will check it out and do my research.I have raised beagles in the past for rabbit hunting,so yes I know what you mean about knowing there place.those dogs can be hard headed as you can get.
Our lab of 13 years passed last November. they are great family dogs, but you have to make sure that you, your wife, and the kids show dominance over the dog early. This way the dog knows its place in the "pack". I spent the time training our lab, and the wife just wanted to be her buddy, that came back to haunt us when the dog thoiught she was higher in the pack than the wife. the dog did finally "get it" and realized that my wife was also her master, but there wer some trying times.
Our new dog (got her last Christmas) is an American Bulldog, and she has been trained correctly to realize that she is the dog, and not one of the humans. I think this new dog actually thrives on one of us telling it what to do, and not letting her get into a destructivce pattern.
My wife and I are talking about getting another dog we have four kids from 7 down to three mths.I like my beagles but looking for a kids kinda dog the labs. look great so guys how are they with kids? cause we live in town, lots of kids in our neighborhood.dont' need anybody getting bit.
sorry don't mean to start dog chatting
My parents have a lab, he is 5 months old. He is a cool dog but a monster in the same respect. He has knocked down my 5year old a couple times by jumping on her, scratched my oldest one when they are swimming in the pool (she won't leave him alone, so that is her fault), he is just an over sized puppy who thinks he is a 60lb lab dog right now. If you try to lay down on the lounge chair in back he is right up there with you pushing you off his chair or wanting you to play tug with him. LOL. With some training he will be a great dog! I do have to say that he is quiet the protector of my kids, if I rough house with them he trys to push me away from them. He is also becoming a half decent bird dog, he looks to see who has a gun and if you do he is right on your side. Now if we could only teach him to find the birds in the brush he would be great. haha.
My lab just turned a year and three months old. He is by far the smartest dog I have ever owned. Potty trained in two days (AT 8 WEEKS OLD!). He knows the difference between his two toys. I can say "Go get me you ball" and he will look all over the house for it until he finds it or he will remember its outstide and go sit by the door and look at me. Geez that thing amazes me sometimes.
I know how you feel Brandon, we just lost our lab of 9 years last month from cancer. He was a close part of the family and it wad VERY hard to put him down . We just got a 4 month old Chocolate Lab last week he is pretty active and fun now its just time to break him in.

Jr I thought would be easier, being we are dealing with trucks/engines and all.
The only Junior that comes to mind for me that goes by Junior, is Dale Jr.

No need to apologize...it's the OT thread. Talk about whatever you want!
Just when I thought I was done working on trucks for a while, Jeff called me this afternoon and said he had a problem with his truck, and '04 Dodge 2500 with a Cummins. It had a horrible miss to it, so we took off the programmer but it still had a miss. I'm still learning about the Cummins engine, so I made a few calls to try and figure it out. The consensus was it is most likely an injector. So my evening consisted of pulling Jeff's injectors so we can send them off on Monday to be tested. I hope a problem is found with an injector, because if that's not it, it's something more serious, like a blown head gasket or a dropped valve seat. Jeff did say that the truck has started to run worse lately though, and his EGT's have been climbing higher, which leads me to believe it's an injector that was leaking fuel. Of course, a blown head gasket could do that too, but the miss started so suddenly and not while he was running hard at all, so I don't think it's a head gasket.
I just didn't figure I'd be working on a Cummins engine again so soon.

Dallas is great with kids, although she has bitten one teenager. He was teasing her in our front yard and had been warned by our neighbor to leave her alone. He ignored her and kept it up. About 20 minutes after the warning he got too close, she got a hold of his arm and that was it. Susan had to take him to the ER (his parents are never around) and got staples in his forearm. I paid for everything and the kid fessed up to teasing her. The police ruled in Dallas' favor and all was good. Other than that, she has been great with kids. The little ones (5 and 7) from two houses over come over and play with Dallas a lot, and she is always gentle with them.
