I have not heard of a controller for the 5R yet that is why I was thinking of an 03+
I was thinking more of the towing capabilities of the 5R with the big 2-3 ratio jump being one thing I don't like about the 4R while towing

Has there even been a CTD planted in a 6.0 truck???? I haven't followed the destroking crowd at all until now. That would be pretty cool.... That said, a built 4r100 will do great behind a CTD.

EDIT: If there was a stand-alone controller, there'd be 5r110s replacing 4r100s.

I have heard they have a stand alone controller now and they are very expensive, but I have yet to see it.

Therein lies the problem. What's the point of spending $6000+ on a 5r110 if you can have a built to the hilt 4r100 for $4000??

Ray, I don't think the 5R would work without a standalone controller, so the 03+ trucks may not be any different from the older ones.

Joe, yes, a transplant has been done on a former 6.0 truck, but the one that I know of doesn't have a 5R. He took the 48RE from the Dodge truck and put it behind the engine.

I just checked the PCS website. They don't have a stand alone controller for the 5R100. Plus, does anyone have a full built 5R100 that has customer support and warranty like a BTS 4R100?

maybe there ain't a logical way

You could use a built to the hilt 700r4 for around $2000 and the choice of gears is neverending...

FWIW, all the 6.0 to CTD conversions I've personally seen have had either built 48REs or a BTS.

Yeah, I'd stick with a built 4r100 myself... I've replaced a few 700r4s -- YUCK!!

EDIT: I'm off to the parts store. Gotta get some stuff my today's projects...

Oh well was just an idea after I saw the adapters
At this stage of the game only way I could have a cummins powered ford would be to buy one already converted, and that chance would probly be slim to none
I can imagine the expense of hiring somebody to do the conversion if you could find anybody

Squatch took out his 6.0 and put a 5.9 in, with compounds and everything.

There are several shops that are doing some conversions. Beans & Hellmans are two that I know of right off the bat. I don't know exact labor amounts they are charging to do a conversion, but I've heard guys are spending a total amount of anywhere from $15-$25K, depending on how modified the engine itself is. I'd a conversion from a shop with an engine similarly modified like mine would cost a guy north of $20K and maybe close to $25K. So it seems labor charges are around $7K to $12K.

Edit: Rich's (UNBROKEN) truck was also a former 6.0.

Congats on the conversion Jeremy. Last time I was on here you blew your motor, and now this. Very impressive. To say the least.

To think of how much I spent rebuilding a 7.3 to teeter on the edge when I could've done this.

Thanks Robby. I sat down and priced everything out, considering my HP goals and what was available on the market earlier this year, and it just made the most sense to do the conversion. Plus I've always been a fan of the 5.9, so part of me wanted to do it anyway.

The AC lines are made and installed. I had to extend the compressor connector wires a little bit today as well, but that wasn't a big deal at all. Tomorrow I'm going to put in the new accumulator and head to the shop to have my buddy charge the AC system. So that's one more thing that I can check off my list.

Still don't have the coolant temp sensor thing figured out, but I do have some pinpoint tests to try when I get some time to do it.

Also having one small issue with limiting RPM on first start of the truck. It will not go over the dreaded 2K RPM when I first start the truck until I've gotten speed up to about 20 MPH for about 3-5 seconds, then it snaps out of it and is fine until I shut the truck off. It's doing this every time I start the truck. No idea what's causing it. Bean suggested a different wire for me to try, one from the PCS, but it didn't change anything. It's like the ECM on the engine is not recognizing speed for a few seconds. I don't know if there's some setting in the PCS I can change to alter the output of the wire, or if there's something else I need to hook up to the ECM, like to tell it the trans is in gear or not in park. I'm working on figuring it out, but it's not a huge issue really.

Thanks Brad. A few updates here. As for the 2K limit on first start, after looking at the trouble codes the engine is giving, Bean suggested I get the ECM flashed for a manual trans, because it's looking for an auto that's not there and that's what's most likely causing the problem. That can be done through another recovery file with the Smarty, but Bob Wagner is gone for a couple weeks, so I won't be able to get the file until after he gets back. No big deal though, as it's more of an annoyance than anything and is not affecting me much really.

As for the coolant temp sensor, I went through the pinpoint tests and found the red/white wire has a short to ground somewhere in it. It's supposed to have over 10K Ohms resistance between the plug and ground, and I've got somewhere around 700 Ohms. I haven't had time to try and find the short yet though.

On a positive note, it's been running well! Got about 1200 miles on it so far and have cranked a little more timing and fuel to it. It freaking rocks now!
