I found the 7014 rod weld easy, But the 7018 penetrate better. With aluminium, I fluked with the lawn chair. All I really did was use the heat to fuse it together, no filler. Years ago I watched McGiver weld a piston rod with a battery charger and a nickel. One of my tech's brought in a stainless steel cookie cutter. It was broken, and for a joke I said I could weld it with our battery charger and a nickel, and it worked. It wasn't pretty, but it worked. Sherm: put the baby gate up if you bring the sheep in Have a great nite'all.
Morning boys Sheep stayed in the barn. I didn't even see them venture out to have a late night snack. Those rams will butt heads all day long, but when its cold and they want to conserve heat, they get along real well. No Velcro gloves here John. These are a haired sheep
Hope everyone has a great day. I was thinking we should pool all our money together to buy the winning US powerball ticket. I heard yesterday it was 1.3 Billion dollars now. I laugh at people saying how they would use it. I think I would use it to buy a warmer country...lol.
If you store 7018 rods you need to keep them dry because if the flux gets damp they are miserable to use. 6011 or 6014 are also nice to work with. An Fyi the first two numbers are tensile strength (70,000ft lbs) the third is position 1 being all position and the last number is in reference to the flux. I just know this but I am not much of a welder. I do have to do some from time to time if I am repairing something at the farm.
Thanks for the info guys!! I am hoping to find one of those "welding for dummies" books somewhere. Perhaps trial and error will suffice, as I don't think any of my projects will involve a life being at risk from a poor weld. Maybe a chicken or something...lol.
You guys will be welcome to my island... I'm hoping to find one in the shape of the blue oval...

Thanks for the refresher Colin, I did learn that plus more that I forgot over the years in a little welding class years ago. Which reminds me that there might be a beginner welding class in your area Sherm, it`s worth looking into....you never know,it just may save an innocent chicken or two.
A warm island in the shape of the blue oval would be perfect.
Good night John.
Morris, that's a great idea, I'll look into that. We have a new college/tech school here in town now, perhaps there's something in there. I did 2 weeks of oxy/acetylene welding back in trade school 13 years ago. I remember really enjoying it and nearly switching my career path then...
Must have caught a Hawaiian breeze passing through over night. Only -13 outside. Feels balmy compared to the -25 + wind chills that we had Sunday-yesterday.
On our way back from a jobsite yesterday, we stopped to look at another job. I got sidetracked...
Currently looking for a job where I can just be around 4 legged animals 24/7...its hard finding something that pays money though...
Good day/evening everyone.
It`s not as cold here as in Manitoba or Ont. but it`s coming before this weekend.
I did take a welding back years ago Sherm, not having a welder at the time really sucked but it did help.
That pup melts my heart, reminds me of one I had and the one I have now is a real sweet heart too. A job with 4 legged animals would be ideal for me too.
Evening boys. It wasn't a bad day outside today...I was stuck inside laying ceramic floor tiles. My knees are saying it wasn't the best of ideas. My wallet is telling them to suck it up
Those pics are from a farm yard we stopped at on the return from our tile job. A possible basement bathroom reno. Not my favorite cup of tea...but if the money is right we will attack it. I was more interested in the livestock...
