i have several tool boxes. but the main box has both sets in it. i've gotten to the point where i can tell which is which. all i do is section the drawers off and you can get to them quick and easy. the places that i have worked don't want you looking for tools. they want the job done quickly or in a timely manner. and i hate hunting for tools.
i know alot of my tools are metric. but i try to keep an even balance between the 2.
standard and metric. its not hard to disifer.
I work on sleds a lot, and especially Cat is great for having both metric and standard spread out all over.
You just get out the 9/16 bolt, and are now onto a 17 mm......frustrating as heck.

organization is a great asset. being organized is worth more than having a helper. i keep all my tools organized when i'm on a jobsite, and i've done more work in a day than 3 guys at the same job, due to being more organized. i know where everything is and things go back in their place when i'm done with them!!
i worked for a chrysler dealer for a few years and that was flat rate. i hated it! that was in the past! mostly hourly if i can help it!
like i said, it makes the job go fast and easier! well in theory! but alot of jobs don't go that way! some are fast and painless and others are time consuming.

Oh man do you ever have that 100 percent right! Everyone has their own ways of organization, but if you are decent at it, production increase alot.
I guess I could never be a tech, I`m not that well organized at times. I`ve got parts for my 56 and my 53 in at least 3 different buildings. My roll away tool boxes, on the other hand, are pretty well organized except I keep running out of room cause there`s just too many good tool sales on all the time.
my FIL's a mechanic at the local JD dealership... he's a big organizational freak too. its a good thing though, if you need to borrow something, its right there. biggest thing is to make sure and put it back where it belongs!!!

Ah yes the tool sales. I am starting to dislike Thursdays as that is when the Cosmopolitan for Men (Canadain Tire flyer) comes out with the tool sales in it. I know their tools aren't known for holding up for daily usage for mechanics but for the average back yard mechanic, they will do.
I have no complaints about Canadian Tire tools except I have all the ones I possibly need and they keep putting on dandy sales that I can`t take advantage of.
Your dad is right, having tools misplaced isn`t good, if you can`t find them easily you`ll waste time looking for them. One of the first things I did when I started getting more tools was to buy a bigger tool box and a roll away.

We have no complaints either. Thats about all hubby has for tools. He/we keep adding to the collection as they come on sale. I bought him the Cdn Tire Rollway tool chest and then later, the little one to go on top. Its really nice (the black one) and the quality is great for the money. So I'm almost as bad as him when it comes to the deals Cdn Tire has on tools sometimes.
