Where we are building is on a hill also. Ive dug our septic tank in the same hill, and trenched in power, water, and sewer lines here. The septic tank was dug down at one point, to 14 feet below the ground level (that was me playing a little ) and didnt run into water at all. So Im sure it would be fine here.
Morris how long have you had your wood basement for? Ever have any leak problems?
After doing some reading tonight it seems ok. I decided we arent going to go concrete though. The whole damp factor about concrete turns me off, but supposedly they dont have the problem with icf.
Wood the main concerns are the arsenics that are in the preservatives of the wood, and the leak/moisture factor. We arent too concerned about the arsenics in the wood, well because people have been using that wood for along time.
The leak/moisture factor is something we are researching though. We want a rock solid leak/rodent free house, one that is efficient too! If the icf was about 10k to 15k cheaper it would be no question
We`ve had our wooden basement since 1984.
We never a moisture problem of any kind, I think wood basement is probably alot drier than a concrete basement.
I would never hesitate to go with wood again......I`ve heard that an inch of wood has more insulation value than a foot of concrete, Sherm would probably know alot better......
Yes with concrete you have to insulate it well, but I would insulate well with wood anyways! Might be cheaper to insulate wood though.
I think the moisture problems with wood, always happen from the outside. Theres gotta be lots of ways to waterproof it though. Sandi was reading that wood basements are supposed to last like 120 years. Wow!
Hey guys, Sorry to change the topic, But what is the work situation out there? Its sooo bad here in BC that my girlfriend and I are thinking about moving out to Sask. From what I have seen on the net it looks good? I just wanted a first had opinion.
Hi Darryl, you and Betsy are more than welcome out here!
One of the reasons we were able to buy house from in Saskatoon was the concrete
basement walls gave way. I`m sure there`s a story behind that but my faith in concrete isn`t all that great since seeing that.....
Unfortunatly, the diamond drilling has come to a hard slow down, but there is lots of other opportunity. Im pretty sure you guys wouldnt have a hard time getting work, and your "boss" (haha) would have no problem at all.
