Feel free to enter in to our convo's when we yap about big trucks and stuff man, always nice to have more people in on them
Sherm, I don`t know if you want to retire that way, the older I get the more I want to hang close to my home fires!
Fom... i love driving with a passion. if i could retire into a life of driving and get paid for it?? boy, that'd be heaven on earth...at least, thats the view from here. I'd even consider doing a hotshotting business if i had a F250-350 in the retirement years. supplementary income you know...
Prep, my uncle did get work in New Brunswick. Its been a good job, lots of running down the eastern seaboard, and he does about one every 2 months to edmonton. i forget the name of the company, but they run all unmarked white Kenworths with the slogan "our best is the least we can do" written on the trailer
Sounds kinda neat.
Im more of a at home kinda guy too though when it comes down to it.
driving a big rig isn't all that hard you either have to double clutch or not use it. in otherwords shift without the clutch. thats the way i was taught to drive without the clutch. my dad who i have wrote about is a master at it. i rode with a guy when i worked at werner and i drove he told me that if i was going out on a roadtest i would have failed. because i never used the clutch. he said it was amazing that i knew how to drive like that. and never ground a gear, not one! for a mechanic! that pretty good!
double clutching is you have to push the clutch pedal down twice to shift! some of the newer trucks recommened that. but you don't have to! ok here's my theory or as a mechanics aspect point of view i suppose! stay with me here ok! there is something called a clutch brake that freewheels on the input shaft of the transmission. until you push the clutch pedal down, what that does is slows transmission down so you can shift it. and double clutching is pushing the pedal down 2 times it slows the tranny down twice as much therefore easing a shift. either upshift or downshift.
i'm like you shift without it! i only use it for starting and stopping! and your right rpm vs speed then when its right shift! or wined it up till you can! its usually between 1400 rpm to 1700 rpm thats the green area! and thats my theory i could be wrong! i just shift by feel!
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
Dumbed down version, you clutch once to take it out of gear and put it in neutral, then clutch again to put it into the next gear.
Up here they say your supposed to use the clutch to shift, that is the "safe" way, and that is how they test ya when you go for your license. After you get it though, most employers will tell you to shift without the clutch, and its very easy (although once ya get used to driving a cat, then go to a cummins, theres a difference!).
As for grinding gears, it happens, Ive been with seasoned drivers (40+ years experience) that still grind a gear every now and then!
I used the clutch to stop and start, and then shifted withOUT the clutch.....thats how i was taught to drive by my uncle who had driven his own rig for some 25 years, and taught me.
To this day when i jump in a rig, i automatically shift without a clutch, and if i try and use it then get screwed up.
Sold my last truck a few years ago to the driver i had on it....owning 6 businesses at once almost gave me a mental breakdown, and i had to sell some off.
Its now nice owning just 2.
For the first while, I couldnt get one shift with the clutch, but it came back after awhile. She got it pretty fast though, so i could stop using the clutch. Amazing how quickly I got used to using no clutch.
its easy to forget what you learned! if you been doing it your own way and good at it
nobody says anything!
thanx guys, and to think i'm a mechanic! go figure! it takes practice prep!
On a side note guess who got stuck today........
First time getting stuck this winter, but I got stuck in the morning and by noon I had 8 re-capped rear wheels and 2 shinny new skidding tires, the tire shop Can-am remarked they dont know how I kept it on the road that long figurativly and literally....my maintence program aint as good as Id like it to be, lol
