I had the engine rebuilt in my 78 F-250 Supercab 2 years ago and the top half went bad. I didn't realize I had to use special oil in it to protect the camshaft and it ate itself up..
So what's this special oil? I had the engine in my supercab rebuilt last year. What kind of oil had you been using?
Perhaps we should tell the 5.7L Dodge owners about this special oil, too. That engine has a bad habit of ruining camshafts.
Nice looking rig. I think I should get the windows tinted in mine, also.
If you retain the flat tappet camshaft you need to run a Zinc additive to the engine oil. According to my engine guy, the federal government a few years back banned the use of minerals like Zinc in the engine oil to cut down on pollution. So now my research is telling me to use Rotella 15w-40 or similar oil that's made for older equipment. As well Lucas makes a Zinc additive for your oil that costs about $20 a pint. If you upgrade to a roller cam none of this is necessary, but the flat tappet cams need the minerals to properly lubricate the cam. You can also buy "hot rod oil" that already has it, but very expensive per quart. I have always used Castrol full synthetic in all of my cars/trucks for years and have gotten a couple hundred thousand miles out of them. But he says the modern oil doesn't coat it sufficiently.
That picture was 5 years ago the day I bought it. it's a little more weathered now, but still good. The motor and trans are original to the truck. I had the 351M built with a thumper cam and 40 over bore. It's not very fast, but boy does it turn heads when I pull into a parking lot. With the dual Flowmaster exhaust and the thumper cam that thing sounds amazing and a lot tougher than it really is. Before and after motor pictures. It now has an HEI distributor and a spacer under the air cleaner for HEI clearance.
Should be the same as on the 351M, I thought 351M and 460 used same head style. These were about $200 at Summit Racing. I liked them so much I used the same ones on my 86 Bronco restoration. You can see my Bronco in the Bronco section of this Forum.
My truck of many colors. Got a new windshield put in today. Going to go pick up master cylinder in a few mins and replace that. Rebuilt rear brakes, brake hoses, some of the hard lines, bearings, races.
