Does anybody else notice the problem is much worse when towing?
I can't believe that FORD has no fix for this problem. I don't believe that it is the Dealers' service dept. that is messing up. I think Ford is NOT pursuing this problem and just sticking it to the consumer!
I don't tow anything but I sure do haul lots of things. Most recently firewood. This trucks vibration problem is most definately amplified when hauling just a couple hundred pounds and gets worse when actually loaded up. It's scary to drive. I've now decided to park it because nobody knows what's wrong with it. Sucks having a $30k dollar truck that you can't even haul anything in. I sent off my DSB papers today. Suppose to have a resolve in 40 days. I sure hope I get a refund. I don't want another Ford vehicle ever again. Don't count on Ford to do a thing unless more people complain the the FTC.
I picked up my truck again for the 7th time. Although the vibe is'nt totally gone, it is much better than it was.
They installed a new rear axle assembly(didn't do anything). 2 new tires (didn't do anything). And a shim to put the driveshaft on less of an angle ( best improvement yet).
Being a machinist I deal alot with vibrations and chattering.
From day one I told the dealer that the problem is in the driveshaft. The u-joints are on too much of an angle causing a harmonic distortion.
I also told them that it should also have a cushin mounted center bearing.
And, that the pivit point on the tilt steering is too far away from the steering wheel itself. If it was closer, the vibe wouldn't echo through the steering wheel as much. They passed my comments on to the enginer. But what do I know I just drive the damb thing.

I have the vibe between 45-55. I have had ring-pinion gear replaced, and recently the drive shaft. The vibe did go away for a short period of time. I have the full vibe back and called my serv. mgr. today. He thinks Ford is working on a new fix. He is going to ask his Ford rep and get back to me. I'll report anything I hear.
Why do Ford dealers try and fix a problem that they have no idea about? If Ford is "working on a fix" why are these dealers still replacing all these parts? Well, it's because the new F-150 is a piece of junk. It's pretty scary.
What about U joints? When the U joints go bad they cause a lot of vibrations. I used to have 91 F-150 that U joint go bad at 20,000 miles. Just a thought.

$$$$$$ for the service dept. That where the dealer makes it's real money.
I just installed 4 new LT 265/70/17 Cooper tires and vibration magically disappeared. Rides like a dream now. I had the original Generals balanced twice using the Hunter Road Force balance machine, and the vibration would just come and go. NEW tires cured the problem!
I currently drive a 97 Chevy Z71 and drove a 90 before that. I'm tired of the same look and have been looking at Titans or FX4's...is the vibration issue important enough that I should steer away from Fords?
I own a 2004 FX4 with a february build date. Knock on wood, I haven't experienced the vibration problem yet. I have the 18" wheels with BFG tires, and drive the truck daily on the expressway over 75. I purchased the truck two months ago and currently have 2800 miles on it. Also, when you get the bigger tires you automatically upgrade from a 3.55 axle to a 3.73. Every manufacturer is going to have a few problems with a new vehicle. All I can say is do some research before you lay down your money.

Ok, so you put a different size tire on the truck. That throws your computer off so it won't run as programmed. However, I'm glad you posted this. This proves that what the Ford service engineer told me is a lie.

Not true at all. My truck has the 17 inch wheels and I have a 3.73 gear axle. I have driven other trucks with the 18" wheels with a 3.55 gear ratio. Also, Fords do not come with BFG tires on them. According the the Ford field service engineer all these trucks do this. Thank you for proving the fact that they all don't. I may be going to court with this data. Then I'll be buying a Toyota.

It's a tranny issue according to a few in the know.
