well truck went back to the dealorship today for the first time today @1100 miles and 10 days of ownership the rear end vibrating between 50 & 60 mph the service dept. tells me that all these trucks have this vibration and it is a design problem that I have to live with but if it gets worse bring it back. anybody have any ideas how i should hande this? thanks for any advice
I called Fords Complaint Dept, the numbers in the manual, tell them that the dealer is telling You they can't fix it, then they will contact the dealer, this will let them know Your serious,
make sure You make a log of all the things that happen, and what they tell You,
documentation is king,
and don't be afraid to fax Your log to them to let them know You have proof of the crap thier telling You..
if that doesn't get You anywhere call Your local TV station who has a consumer protection unit, bad publicity will really rock thier boat..
I callled the dealer this mourning, it's the first time they saw the transcipt of the call I made to Ford, the guy started reading it and all of a sudden they asked to call me back, that was at 10 am this mourning, don't know if this is good or bad, but I know I sure got thier attention, I'm not playing thier game..
let me know what they tell you. I going to take mine back again one more time before I call Ford. I am going to let them no that this not something that I find acceptable or something that I'm willing to live with....
Guys this topic was brought up a while ago. I did not have a problem, but remember a bunch of posts about it. Not sure how far back the posts go but I want to say it was about 9 months ago. I think there were some technical bullitens and the problem was fixed. Hope this helps
Heres my 2 cents. There is one thing to try but the dealer cant do it. Back in the late 90s early 2000 trucks there is a weight bolted to the rear axle (looks like 2 *****). You can go to the juck jard or order a new one the holes are still in the new axles it will bolt right up worked for me.
This is very old issue, however, there are several things to look for to help minimize your problems. I still have not resolved mine completely, but recommend getting the device installed in my gallery. It's a vibration dampening kit and is noting more than a heavy round weigh mounted by rubber bushings in a steel box which is connected to the rear of the frame to help counter act the reverberations which transmit back and forth on the "super stiff" frame.
You can replicate this problem without even moving the truck.
Just open the tail gate and let it drop slightly the last couple of inches. Put your hand in the top of the truck bed and you will feel the vibration travel from the rear of the truck to the front and back again...and again.
You'll also notice the bed wobble violently. Voila! This is the issue.
After the vibration dampening kit is installed, this is reduced significantly, but still there.
I've had the clutch packings rebuilt, drive line yoke re-greased, vibration dampening kit installed, went through several types of tires which were balance, road force tested, etc. While the problem is much better, it's still there. Now there are looking at working on the steering rack to cure the "nibble problem" which you can search for in the forums.
What's so sickening about this issue is the truck performs great, both in power and gas mileage like no other truck I've owned. I love towing with this truck and getting 18 mpg constantly on long freeway trips (with top cover).
I really just hope they figure this out and we can all stop going to therapy over this, right? :-)
All I know is that on My truck it isn't rpm related it is speed related, what i mean by that is when You feel the vibration and You shift the truck [ remaining at the same speed ] the vibration doesn't change,
and if I was going to bet on it, I would put my money on something that is spinning at driveshaft speed, [ 3.73 times axle speed ] and to be more specific the pinion shaft, but it could be anything in the driveline, even an incorrect Yoke....
jbone to let you know, after calling Ford the first time, the dealer wasn't calling me back, so I called them again, and they called the dealer while I was on hold, and confirmed what I was telling them, and now there's 2 messages on my machine and one on my cell, so we'll see what's gonna happen this time..
I had a vibration problem also, a little different though. It was a suspension "rebounce" problem. And I got the same runaround that your getting. They told me it was a inherient condition of the vehicle an live with it. I filed a Lemon Law lawsuit and won. Every penny including insurance was refunded to me. Dont hesitate to use that tool if thy cant or wont fix the problem.
My F150 now has 1700 miles and I just noticed a vibration at 40 mph. Vibration is driveshaft speed, I immediately stopped by the local dealer and I was told that Ford has quite a few of these units with the same problem. They stated that ford engineers are now attempting to find a fix. They offered to replace the ring and pinion with no guarantee that this would fix the problem. Then they said the the best bet would be to wait and see if ford finds the problem then have the truck repaired. So apparently ford knows about this and is working on it. So I guess I'll just accelerate past 40 quickly.
new user here - truck is at dealer today.
purchased truck 8/21/04
build date 8/03
3.73 rear end
lariat supercrew
have had the steering gear replaced - this took care of the shimmy at 60 mph plus.
have had tires road forced balanced.
have had the drive shaft replaced. this reduced the vibration that you feel in your seat and the accelerator - but it is still there.
just had a call from the dealer - they say the tech acknowledges the vibration and is on the technial support hotline (bs).
My vibration occurs under normal acceleration between 50-60 mph. you feel it in the seat and your feet. once you get past 62 mph it goes away and it only felt again but a lesser vibe at around 72-74 mph. Is this the same vibration that everyone is talking about? If so, has anyone had any luck in getting it fixed? If yes, Please advise the fix.
I am having a hard time believing that this is related to the bed.
Thanks for any positive input.

I had a ring and pinion replaced as well, it helped for a bit, but my vibe came back. I just had a new driveshaft installed. It seems to help a lot. I still feel a small vibe, but it is much better.
they said it was a redesigned drive shaft part # 4L3Z-4602-XB. I have a 4x2 Screw.
The damper kit mentioned above is # 4L3Z-5D008-AA. It is on TSB 04-3-3
Thanks for the info - I need to check my repair order to see if they listed the p/n for the drive shaft. I will advise dealer of the TSB for the dampner.

I picked up my truck last night - dealer has order the dampner kit. They test drive my truck and then went and test drove one with the same option as mine - they indicated that the other truck had some vibration but not to the degree of mine.
Hope the dampner kit does the trick! I am getting tired of chasing this issue with a brand new truck.
