Welcome to the forum! best on the whole FTE site! Saved me X & $ (walked me thru a carb rebuild) lotta knowledgable, friendly folks. U could also join yer "local chapter" to meet up w/local folks (not cyber space) for real boots-on-the-ground comradship or technical expertise. Click on the Forums button (right under the pic runnin accross the top of this page) and scroll to Chapters (I believe). My state gets together once a month for adult entertainment - kinda nice for an ol bachelor non-mechanic...
Just helped a friend replace his efi 4.9. Piston skrit piece was knocked off n floatin around in there. Took a wk to find a fuel rail needed replacin. His ran up n down the east coast haulin used cars north to a used car dealer (just went outta biz) in this, the "5 college area". "How many miles on it Wild Bill (the owner's name)?" "I don't know, speedo turned over ten yrs ago and broke."
78 f150 70k miles got her with 59k 4 months back. developed electrical issues, and bad lifter issues. in the process of getting machined. .020 over, comp cams 268h cam comp cams lifters, comp timing, comp rocker arms, offy 2 plane, 4bbl edle, new clotch and flywheel abd otherbstuff going on her in the next week. cant get head work done for another 4 months due to funds lol its supposed to be my daily driver as well.
my 87' has just about 137000 and runs good, only had electrical problems and distributor problems but shes doing good and i just put a brand new clutch in her.
Just turned 225k yesterday and picked up oil for an oil change. I continue to be impressed with this engine and the truck. Forty miles a day commuting with 150 mile dashes up to Maine on Fridays delivering 16-20 mpg. Truck will cruise @ 80 mph, haul a 4500 lb 5th wheeler RV, and it is still a comfortable and good looking truck.
Like me its starting to show her age but we still both deliver.

I bought my 1992 4.9l a year ago with 36k miles on it for $1800 at an auction.
It is now sitting at 44,500 miles. I bought it from a university who bought it new and it was only used to deliver mail around campus and was well maintained. Hopefully I'll be driving it for a lot of years to come!
hey ya'll at FTE.. just so you know I started reading this thread last night, was reading till 1 am, then finished the rest this morning. Once done I registered as a member of FTE. I have used FTE a number of times for info, but this 46 page thread converted me to a user! This is my first post even.
I drive a 88' f150 4x4 I bought 2 weeks ago. It has 119,xxx miles on it and runs great. (i feel like a real noob with only 119k!) I got 18.8 mpg the last fillup. I wanted a 4.9 as my dad had one growing up, which he later sold. He saw it recently and it had over 365,xxx miles on it never rebuilt. I love the 4.9. Reading this makes me want to go drive it.
I have the M5OD in mine and it will need a clutch sooner than later. I love the mileage with the 5spd, but really am a fan of the t18. Any thoughts of going to the t18? what is the best mileage you get outta those.
Thanks!
