Evening Tim and Ken. Busy here. Got the last of the beets out of the garden and a good row of carrots. We were nearly 50 today so I let the fire in the furnace go out and late this afternoon I opened it up and cleaned it out as well as the bottom of the chimney. I have a stainless liner in a masonry chimney, so I don't get and build up the length of the chimney. It falls back down and builds up at the bottom. My furnace goes in right at ground level, and I have a clean out opposite of it, so it works out pretty nice. Still, you have to bend down and actually do the work, but it could be worse. I remember back in childhood days when airtight stoves first came out and folks were still burning the green wood, they had always burned in their old stoves. the chimneys used to plug up pretty bad. I have seen a big log chain dropped in from the top to clean them out and still wouldn't go thru. There used to be a lot of chimney fires back then. Well, at any rate, things have gotten much better since then. I try to have all my wood cut two years ahead of time.
I have an air tight in the shop and waiting for the wood to dry out is really the only way to go. We also have floor heat in there that keeps at a nice temp for the most part, in the coldest part of the winter it will get as low as mid 40s. It was maybe 60° in there this afternoon and low 30s outside.
Steve, On you furnace, is it a forced air furnace heated with wood?
Yes, the furnace is forced hot air. Works great for drying clothes and my wife loves having the register making the bathroom toasty.
That in floor heat is really great. I wish my shop had it. I have a decent wood stove in there and you can get the space warm enough to work in a flannel shirt on cold days, but the floor is so cold you really feel it! I have thought of going the boiler route for the house and running over to the shop but the older I get the less big projects appeal to me. I am considering a small, shed addition to the shop though. Maybe two!
Good evening gents, no snow here. Hasn't been that cold yet, although I'm sure my time is coming. Plenty of wind and rain though. Temps in the 40's and blustery chilly. That wind just seems to have a bite to it. Rained off and on all day today, expecting a steady hard rain all night overnight, and for most of tomorrow. Possible clearing by Saturday. I just got my ark plans in the mail. lol.
Speaking of furnaces, I finally got around to having the furnace guys come over and finish the unit heater install in my shop. Several years ago the guy doing the hvac install in my house was helping me with it but he passed away from cancer before we got it done. Now that I have a working bathroom with water and stuff out there, the need seemed a bit more pressing to finish it up. I don't need much, and frankly I'm kind of a tightwad on the propane, but enough to take the chill off and be comfortable working is nice.
Wondrous Weekend Eve Washington and all the crew. It is almost time to get the weekend Party started!
30° to start the day, white sheet on the lawn, plants and such but the road is clear and the vehicles are clear. The Soothsayers are predicting rain and a high of 42° this evening when the Party starts.
No power this morning, been in between rain and snow most of the night. I suspect there is lots of heavy snow a little higher up causing the power outage.
I fired up my little generator and made coffee.
I was just reading there is still 165,000 people without power in Western Washington and they have been without power for several days.
