Belated good morning Oregon and everyone everywhere else. 59.5 and clear. Lawns to mow, a hedge to trim and cars and pickups to wash today depending on motivation, time and more motivation. It's also way past time to get a boat in the water and ready to go, although that won't happen today. 14 days and a wake up before 2 weeks at Diamond Lake.
Had to come back to the valley Friday evening. Not a happy camper. Problems popping up for someone else that have to be nipped in the bud before they involve us.
Yesterday afternoon my hunting & fishing partner called. Just south of Neskowin a buck ran out of the woods crossing the highway and slammed into the driver's door of the car ahead of his older son and his wife. Buck was DOA. The driver of the car that had been hit didn't want anything to do with the deer. She said she had no intention of trying to salvage the meat and told them to go ahead and take it.
The kids called in and got a salvage number from the State and called dad for a pickup. He called me for help.
So, we retrieved the deer. It was a big buck, as far as black tails go, and would have had a pretty good-sized rack judging from the base on the antlers. One side was busted off at the base and the other side had had the budding branches busted off at the main beam. We checked it out and it appeared to be a fatal head injury only. The body seemed solid and did not seem to be busted up at all. Got it hung up, cleaned out and skinned. It was in pristine condition with no loss of meat whatsoever. Score 3. You just have to love the Oregon salvage law. It's not very often but every once in a while, it works out with some very good meat that doesn't go to waste.
