I didn’t realize this was going down so fast. I have some suggestions.

Leave the AC compressor hooked up and put it in the passenger battery tray.

Leave PS pump hooked up and on the bracket and put that out of the way.

Remove oil filter.

I don’t normally remove grill, header panel or AC condenser. In the video above I was under the garage door and couldn’t go high enough with the hoist.

Took us about seven hours to pull it. Not bad for our first time!

Need to get some proper length bolts to mount it to the stand tomorrow. Interested in what well find. I've a suspicion that this engine has been pulled before.

Might I recommend putting the engine stand plate higher up on the engine? Those engines are super top heavy, and when you roll it, you'll find out. I like to used the hoist to help control it when I roll them over.

The stand holds it but is rather wore out; think I'll have to get a new one to turn the engine over or even move the stand.

Today was mostly cleanup day but was able to get pushrods and injectors out. No obviously bent rods. Looks like at some point the driver's side bank of injectors was refurbed with new o-rings (and a new alliant injector on #8). The passenger side seemed to have original o-rings that were rock hard. One had some weird goop on it:

Other notes:

Seem to have had a slight exhaust leak

The uppipe gasket separated from it's metal crush ring upon handling it

No discernable flexplate cracks

Those quad seal o-rings work very well.

That area of the injector is sealed between the lower o-ring and the copper crush washer. Is that oily film from oil/fuel gushing out of the galleries as you pulled the injector or was it on there already you think?

That's pretty typical for the DP v-band joint but if you really want to seal that up, v-band gaskets do exist.

I don't recall mine having those spot weld marks and extra holes near the periphery. It is also stamped E40D on there.

Huzzah!! Are you still planning to tap that hole for a fitting then?

Any indications of where your metallic particles came from?

Good news about the quad o-rings! Another well performing FTE inspired modification.

As Leonard mentioned, I don't know if the E40D flexplate is different from the 4R100 flywheel, but definitely worth looking into before reusing that one.

Regarding the near future engine stand purchase, SSJ wrote up a few notes for us all to learn from a little while back. The link is below...

Spot weld mark are from weld on balancing weights in other side

94-03 7.3 flexplates are the same

They have used leftover OBS "e4od" flexplates in e99..
That confirms the claim that e99 is build from leftover parts..

A brand new one from Ford also says "E4OD" and yes, they are still available as I buy a lot of them. Nothing "leftover" about it. Same transmission essentially hooked to the same engine....why change?

Taking a rest day since I overdid it last couple days.

@FordTruckNoob Not sure if that's fuel+oil mix or what. Didn't see it on the other injectors. Those gaskets look nice... would need to find a 4" one. I'm not sure; would like to tap the oil supply & return since I'd never have to replace the o-rings, but then again those ones look like they'll last a long time. No indications on where the metal was coming from yet.

Was thinking of replacing the flexplate with one from Summit Racing so as to avoid potential cracking from higher power. Seems it's 0.045" thicker than stock, I know Wyse has said good things about them.

AA explained to me he doesn't think highly of the Melling LPOP because it's somewhat thinner than stock and will "make more pressure but it produces less volume". Think I'll go with a stock pump replacement instead of the Melling.

Will also have to replace injector harness as the original one was starting to break apart (both sides were like this). Don't expect the 50c mod to save you when the clip breaks!

Was also able to get one manifold off (other side has one stick bolt). To my surprise, no apparent exhaust leaks!

Making great progress and a well placed rest day makes for a more productive work schedule.

Here's my .02 on the Melling LPOP...I have one. I haven't noticed anything different, but I don't utilize a real LPOP gauge either. I guess a person could contact Melling and ask them what the data is for that pump and compare it to the OEM pump data. Anything else is simply grabbing at straws.

Can I make a case for the Melling while being narrower, may have less, but deeper "teeth"....think that might change the equation?

The quarter needs to be cut for the $0.50 mod.

Even then, I found it will allow the plug to get loose. Now I go the $0.52 mod.

Found this information in some old message board posts. Looks like the change of the lobe geometry provides enough additional flow to make up for it being thinner and then some.
