We caught mullet, trout, croaker, pinfish, shrimp and blue crabs last week. Was catching bait fish and shrimp in the cast net then working the live bait for larger fish. We caught several nice blue crabs in the crab pots. Flounder have been hit and miss.
I assume you'll be fishing from the beach. Plenty of fish running near shore this time of year. A long rod (10') and some 10-20lb test, a few bottom rigs and an assortment of 2/0-8/0 circle hooks should catch anything between blues and blacktips.
Dig up sand fiddler crabs for great live bait. Frozen shrimp and mullet work well. Squid occasionally works well. Use a cast net and walk up and down the shore line looking for flashes. Good way to get live bait as well. Keep a bucket handy for the bait fish.
Definitely get some sand spikes to hold your rods.
I've bolted a few pieces of PVC pipe to the rack for the receiver hitch. I just back up to where I'll fish. Also I'll work the inlet during low tide for bait fish (though I still need to remember to grab a cast net) the tide pools there will be teaming with them. I'm running a little low on bottom rigs in the box, but I'll pick some more up. I've got a new rig to try this year called a fish finder. Not sure how it'll do, but it came recommended. I'm swapping out my line this week on all the long rods to 15. can't remember what i was running before but I do remember it was WAY too heavy.
I'll pick up the hooks you recommend as well.
Planning to actually pull something in this time, un like last year. Then all i caught was a good buzz, but then I didn't take any bait with me, but lots of beer
Yeah, for sure. I'd like to make it some time regardless.
It looks like you might be in luck then. This month we're talking about heading west. Check out the dinner thread and let us know if you can meet up with us.
Dustin stopped by yesterday and we got quite a bit done in the shop. But man, is my body not used to being out in the shop past 9 at night.. super sore this morning.
Right on, I'm familiar with passing through Hampstead on the way to the beach house each year. I'm hoping the Mrs and I will make the aforementioned dinner next Thursday, so it'd be cool to meet you there as well, if it works out that way for each of us.
Everytime I see your avatar, I always first think it's googly eyes..
Morning, NC!
Whenever anyone mentions "googly eyes" I'm reminded of Christopher Walken's SNL sketch - "Gardening Tips from a guy who's really afraid of plants." You guys oughtta look it up when you get a chance.
