Thanks.

I got the USB extension from Amazon. On the first post in this thread I’ve got all part numbers and where I bought them.

I would not recommend that. Long story short I had a tire separate and tore up my front end (95% sure it was the one that started out as the spare). The tire shop told me that a spare should be just that. While that shouldn't have happened to me the spare should only be used for temporary situations even if it's new. Mine was a new tire and thought I could get a few more miles out of the set as well as get some use out of the tire before it gets too old. Whether it was a contributing factor or purely incidental I will only use the spare temporarily in an emergent situation even though it is a full sized spare.

Just my .02

That was just a coincidence that has you permanently freaked out about using a spare for any long length of time.

I had a buddy from a local Mustang group (over ten years ago now...wow time flies) borrow 3 temporary donut tires from three other members and with his donut spare, ran all 4 temporary tires for over 6 months on his V8, until he could afford new tires.

And he drove like a fool on those temporary, speed-limited spares.

True. Could be that I just have bad luck. Have had similar issues in the past and only use the spare as such now. Overkill or not it gives me peace of mind.

Very helpful and interesting thread. I'm in a very similar situation in that I just got my X and my to do list looks very similar to what you've done, plus the interior needs some love. So I'm curious, back in May you thought you'd do things differently with your original purchase, do you still feel that way?

While my Ex is in pretty good condition, I could have found a very nice, well maintained example for the $26k I’ve got in it so far. That said, I’ve actually enjoyed the process of getting it up to speed.

I may be singing a different story by Monday though. This weekend I’m planning on doing: HPOP lines, FRx, HPx, CAC boots (with plenum inserts), AIH delete, power steering pressure hose, transmission line thermostat, heater hoses, passenger side fuel line, and new wastegate actuator vacuum lines.

I’m a bit nervous about doing this much, but I figured while I had things apart doing the CAC boots... This is the definition of mission creep. Thanks FTE

Started working on this table’s worth of parts Saturday morning. Finished everything except the transmission thermostat and one of the heater hoses in 13.5 hours. That was straight time...no food or bathroom breaks. Did get some liquid, but obviously not enough if I didn’t go to the bathroom.

Removed air cleaner box and battery tray for better access.

Spider out.

Replaced Power Steering Pressure Hose. Was pretty painless with the battery box/air cleaner and CAC tube out of the way.

I couldn’t replace one of the heater hoses as the one I got was not the same as what was in my truck. Maybe because mine is an excursion with rear heat/AC, not a truck? It had some kind of sensor spliced into the line and a bunch of other small pieces of hose.

There was some wear on the passenger side fuel line. Not too bad though.

You can kind of see the new fuel line. Putting on the back fitting was a bit of a pain as you could only move the wrench about 1/8 turn, flip it over and do another 1/8 turn.

This little bitch was the bane of my existence yesterday. The passenger side fuel port for the FRx. I must have messed with that thing for two hours trying to get it started. I even unbolted the A/C compressor to give myself a little more room. I eventually found that it's hole isn't parallel to the other head bolts nearby. I was trying to line it up with an incorrect datum and couldn't get the threads to start. By comparison, I got the rear one on the driver side in one try.

FRx and HPx done!

Riffraff Plenum Insert in. Yes, that red piece if tape went into the plenum. I cleaned it out but who knows what else made it into there, the oil system, or the fuel system with all the gunk that was in the engine compartment with all these different mods happening “at the same time”.

AIH Delete. Very easy to do when the spider is already out.

Spider back in with new boots. Getting the plenum boots onto the spider or vise versa was a pain. Ended up using a plastic trim tool like a tire lever for installing a bike tire. That worked well. Getting the turbo lined up with the spider took some work too. Ended up using a large set of channel locks to get them aligned.

Everything put back together and ready to leak test. Also shows the new Turbo Wastegate Actuator Lines.

I apparently never took a picture of the new HPOP lines. They were a different story. When replacing the o-rings in the head fittings, take them out of the head... Also, my valley was completely dry before starting this project. After the HPOP lines were disconnected, that all changed.

Important takeaways:
-I'm too old for this.
-If I'm ever going to do engine work like this again, a topside creeper is mandatory.
-The handiest tool in my toolbox was the extendable antenna-like magnet. Countless tools retrieved from the valley, and the damn FRx passenger fitting was retrieved from where it had fallen at least 100 times.
-I think I might need to change the Ex's name from Bob to Riff, as it seems like half the parts on it are from Riffraff.

Nice job. I have done 99% of those myself. Have you replaced the o-rings on the turbo pedestal, or rebuilt the fuel bowl?

I haven’t done either of those yet. No need for now. Next thing on my list (after transmission thermostat) are Hutch and Harpoon mods.

Tackled the transmission thermostat this evening.

Had to move the Magnefine transmission filter up front as it’s previous location was the only logical location for the thermostat.

Mounted the thermostat on the front passenger frame rail. One of the frame holes just happened to line up with one of the threaded holes in the thermostat.

Deep thought for the day: sloped driveways and creepers don’t play nice together.

Transmission thermostat works! 42* out this morning. After the 6.0 cooler mod the TFT never got to 170, even in the middle of summer here in the south. On cool days like today the transmission wouldn’t get to 120.
