I'm starting to want a newer truck! I crawled under it today to check the dipstick adapter and fuel line for leaks. So far those are my only accomplishments.
Then I started to look around to see why the drivers side is still wet and found the following:
Looks like I need a VC gasket...
And a filter on the CCV (I got tired of the smell and fumes under the cab, so I put it back in the intake last week)...
Looks like that valve cover is tweaked. You might check it for being 'warped'. I know I had one leaking, new gasket and still leaked. I layed it on a flat surface and lightly tapped on it and no more leaks. I can't tell, where is that crack?
I Just came across this thread and read all 13 pages to get caught up to speed. Keep up the good work. These old trucks are worth preserving, and they're well on their way to becoming classics.
Thanks Nate. I'm just getting frustrated with the usual one step forward, three steps back. To many projects and not enough time.
That's the truth! My list is growing faster than I can mark things off of it. I try to remind myself to enjoy the tasks I like and just accept that the work can be its own reward sometimes. But yeah, I think we all get weary of it sometimes....

I felt this sentiment pretty deep the last couple of months. Hang in there Darin!
Are you sure the VC is actually leaking? You can run these engines with the VC's off completely and not lose any oil. Could it be one of the HPOP hose fittings or a gallery plug or something leaking? I don't know that I have ever seen an actual VC leak on these engines, but hey, I guess there is a first time for everything.
It sure looks like the VC to me. An HPOP hose leak would run down into the valley and a gallery plug down the back. This is running down the middle of the drivers side block. But you're right, I've read that you can run without the VC (never done it myself), but as I understood it, that was only at idle; anything beyond idle and oil goes everywhere.
Yeah, I've run them with the VC's off before, but it was just at idle; that may be the case. At any rate, like I said, there's a first time for everything! Hopefully a VC gasket solves it for you.

Yeah, anything above idle and oil starts to go places...LOL....I am hoping the VC fixes it as well.
I probably just do the Dorman SD gasket. It's $70 for a Fel-Pro OBS gasket only; $66 for a Dorman OBS gasket, pigtail, and UVCH; and $73 for a Dorman SD gasket, pigtail, and UVCH.
