Well, last week my throw out bearing 'threw out'! Finally got the trans out last night and it looks like I have a few other things that will need to be addressed.
Current plans: DONE - New throw out bearing DONE - New clutch fork DONE - New clutch DONE - New rear main seal DONE - DIY bellowed up pipes DONE - Turbo pedestal O-rings DONE - EBPV delete pedestal DONE - Replace orange turbo intake boot DONE - Efuel DONE - Stage 1 injectors DONE - Finally finish the IC (just need pipes) DONE - Replace damaged tailpipe from last months blown tire DONE - Need to look into new tunes for the Stage 1s DONE - And any other oil leaks I can find/fix at this time.
Wow! That list is longer than I thought.
The big black spot on the drivers up pipe is a grease spot from my gloves when I was trying to get the upper trans bolts, but there is definitely some leakage on both sides of the collector.
It really didn't sound bad at all until the very end. We were in Hell's Canyon when I noticed the shifting wasn't quite right, then a little chirp like you hear when you have a dry bearing in your accessory drive but coming from the trans. We made it back to camp, let it sit for a couple days, then hooked up the trailer and headed home. As I was parking the trailer was when it really started making awful noises.
Question for everyone on the DIY bellowed up pipes: would it be better to get these flat flanges and maybe these copper gaskets or just weld the stock clamps the pipes and reuse the donuts? I re-read through Bill's thread and both were recommended.
Well, the clutch is a definite need. The disc is almost down to the rivets. Clutch and flywheel are off, fuel bowl is out (for good), and I'm working on pulling the up pipes and turbo. Any tricks on getting the bottom nuts on the turbo/collector flange?

Get the flat flanges for your up pipes. In my original thread I left 3/4" of the pipe going into the bellows, but I figured out later that is too much. You can shorten that up a little.
What do you think about the copper gaskets? Or should I get something else? You still still using the 'half' donut gaskets?
No, the half donut gasket was just on the first couple I did. I started buying 10"x10" sheets of Mr. Gasket exhaust manifold gasket material and cutting them out of that. There are also some stamped stainless steel gaskets out there that will work, but don't know right off where to get them. I never used them.
The lower nuts on the turbo collector were a pain. I had to cut a 17mm wrench in half and then use a second wrench hooked on the cut end to get the suckers off.
Looks like most of my oil leaks are from around the turbo; so definitely getting new pedestal orings, but if the EBPV is leaking, I'll probably just delete it. I was amazed at how loose the up pipes are with just the bolts to the manifolds removed. Not much to take pictures of last night... everybody has seen a fuel bowl get thrown on the shelf.
