Is there a specific or technical reason that Ford didn't put the 390 in the High-boys?

Here is a list of Highboy engines by year (1V indicates 1-barrel carb.):
1967: 240 1V Six, 300 1V Six, 352 2V V-8
1968-1972: 240 1V Six, 300 1V Six, 360 2V V-8
1973-1976: 300 1V Six, 360 2V V-8
1977: 300 1V Six, 351M 2V V-8, 400 2V V-8

Here is a list of Highboy engines:
240 1V Six (1967-1974)
300 1V Six (1967-1977.5)
351M 2V V-8 (1977)
352 2V V-8 (1967)
360 2V V-8 (1968-1976)
400 2V V-8 (1977)

Two modifications are common. First, the 360 is identical to the 390,
with the exception of the rotating assembly. Although 390's were never
offered in Highboys, many owners with 360's replace the rotating assembly,
converting to a 390, or sometimes to a 410. The other common modification
is to replace the factory engine with a 460, which was never offered in
Highboys.

The biggest motor you could get (factory) in a hiboy was a 360 with a 2 bbl. Lots of people think that their trucks have 390's when, in fact, it's only a 360. 390 engines were only in the 2wd's.

It has been pointed out that the 300, 351M, and 400 were the engines available in the 77 model year.

I think I am removing the Holley DP from the blue truck and going back to the Holley 4 bbl.

No real specific or technical reason that I can think of, but here's my theory...

The 4x4 truck was sold as a "work horse" and the 360 fit that bill just fine.

The 390 was more of a "sport" engine and it may have pulled from the view as the 4x4 as a work truck.

This is only my $0.02

My views may be a little skewed though, thank you Jameson.

The 360 was the work horse and pulled a plow.
The 390 was a racehorse that could pull it's own trailer

Is this thread still for General Discussion? I am generally disgusted that is snowing and cold outside and I need to go work on my truck.

Guess I will go work in my shop then, with my noisy kerosene torpedo heater droning out my stereo. Bummed.

I'll trade you working on your truck in the shop with a noisy torpedo with my changing the rear brakes and rotors on a 2009 Montanna in a driveway at -14c on a snow base.

Perry no thanks on outside work in that kind of weather, been there done that. Remember I was in Russia in Feb, -33 and then start a helicopter and get that big fan going. BBBRRRRR

Grinner, yes for the most part, I had to put in a new distributor in it. One of the wires right at the module broke....and it was seized in the intake. So after forcibly removing/cracking the lower housing, I replaced it.

Then I put on a Holly double pumper. I am gathering parts for some engine mods next.

Yeah it's true, you've experienced Manitoba winters and summers. Cold, snowy and windy to hot, dirty and windy.

Turns out Nataly needs a caliper rebuilt so I guess it's a pair of calipers tomorrow, chinook is supposed to be coming in, could change 20c in 12 hrs.
