I started by welding 1/2" tubing to the top end of a 6" length of 3/4 " square tubing.

Sliced off the excess with a zip wheel and completed the welding on the two uprights.

Using the magnetic square positioned the upright on the cross over bar to make my welds.

With the one end welded in place I leveled it vertically in the vice and then positioned the upright on the other end and made my welds.

Time to make the end caps the cross bar pivots on, I cut a piece on 1/8" thick plate 2 1/2" x 5" and bent it in my vise then welded a piece of tubing 1" inside diameter x 1 1/4" long. I needed to clean out the inside of this tube with a grinding stone attached to my die grinder so the cross tube would pivot freely inside.

I then mounted the under hood rods in place of the originals.

Not owning a lathe I took a piece of 1 1/2" round stock black phenolic plastic to a friend who does own a lathe and had him copy the guide wheel from my panel.

I proceeded to make the guide rails from 3/8" round bar stock, although I could have bought nice shiny stainless steel rails for $65 / side I've decided these will work just fine once cleaned up and painted. Cheaper too.
