Thanks for your assistance, this whole thread definitely helped. It would get permanently hung up on the IDS startup screen, but opening as Administrator seemed to help, so did disabling Windows Defender...not sure exactly what got it to open.
Also was getting a Testman error code when initially connecting to the PCM, but after a few tries it caught and it was able to finish the connection process...not sure what that was about.
Without having it in front of me so I can remove the cover there is no way to tell.
Forscan does a very good job and seems to do everything that the VCMII clone does.
I just wanted to put it out there, do NOT upgrade to Windows 11 if you have this clone. Windows 11 will NOT support the Prolific chip in this device and it will fail to communicate. The adapter will show up in Device Manager and its name on Windows 11 is "PL2303TA DO NOT SUPPORT WINDOWS 11 OR LATER, PLEASE CONTACT YOUR SUPPLIER." Just had to reinstall Windows 10 on my Microsoft Surface.
Do not purchase this tool if you plan to use any version of IDS after version 125. FlyOBD has stopped cracking the program after version 125. When I inquired about it I was told I should buy the VNCI MF J2534, I believe they said it was about $90 but was told it wasn't listed on their website.

interesting. Windows upgrades also tend to screw these types on thing up.
For things like this, I would use a used laptop, dedicated, then run a virtual machine inside it. Doing that would ensure you don't ever need to update the laptop, and reset the virtual machine to a same state all the time.
I just use a Panasonic Toughbook CF-30 and a SSD in the caddy.
I think set up the laptop how I want it and then make an image with Acronis.
If I screw it up, I just wipe it and reinstall the image that has the OS and
any patching done. The Acronis image tool is very fast.I think under 15 minutes from
the backup file to the SSD.
After searching this thread, I think I'm going to try to get IDS v86 to work. It took a lot of looking around the web before I found some files that hopefully will get me up and running (most every link I found was dead). I will try to get the software working at a later time.
The main thing I'm trying to tackle now is finding the correct OBDII adapter that will work with IDS v86.
While it has been a while for me to use IDS, you'll need to get a VCM or something similar in a clone. Some play nicer than other, I personally have had good luck with FLYOBD. The last version I ran was v125.

Also, I wonder if it is worth trying to run a more modern version of IDS than v86. I was thinking that I would keep it simple, since I'm primarily looking to run the Cylinder Contribution Test (perhaps there are special capabilities of the newer versions of IDS). It seems to me that if I stick to the 6.0L trucks, then I don't need anything past v86.
I know you asked a few months ago, maybe better late than never ... YES, it is. Their VCMII is the two (PC) board clone, not the cheaper one emulator board. That is why in their 'language' it is advertised as 'best quality' VCM. It works with the software they send you, either on a W7 imaged bootup disk (with a VMWare image) or native install one.
Also, a native Windows 10 IDS install works using either of these YouTube videos for either v117 or v120. Works like a charm. Just make sure you get the VCMII with the two PC boards (which is what this place sells).
