Yes but the chrome is so nice and shiny it's going to hurt me a lot to scuff it up with sandpaper.

My hood reflects more than enough light for me to never want that. I was raised in an aviation family. There's a reason helicopter and airplane cowls get painted flat black... although my plane's cowl is blue.

Road signs in Canada weren't metric until 1972, so I'm well adjusted to driving with a US speedo. The irony is though that our speed limit signs in KMH represent the traffic speed in MPH. Canadians like to drive fast.
Tro.....why is there no snow in your pictures?! On the map, I'm technically further south than you, and it's frickin cold here with lots of snow.
I've had like three days of non-stick snow this winter. I'm surrounded by the Rockies so I get rain about 180 days of the year, or about 60 inches worth. Anywhere else in Canada has snow.
Northern Ontario can be very unpleasant, from December to April. Unless you're into sledding! I don't even have to worry about having my engine clean-up done till like May, when it gets nice enough to drive the Merc.

I'm glad I live in an area where the hobby/project vehicles can be driven pretty much year 'round. The worst part of the year, here in south Arkansas though, is the summertime with its oppressive heat and humidity.
You definitely need A/C in your ride, here in the south, if you want to ride comfortably. Of all the things I've been adding to my truck lately, an A/C system isn't one of those items.
A/C will ultimately be installed on my truck though.
I got my second cluster today from ebay for $75. I can't wait to get it cleaned up.
The rust blotches on this bezel all come from pinholes in the chrome so I started by lightly scraping them off with an Exacto knife.
Then I took a ball of aluminum foil and some Mothers aluminum polish and lightly scrubbed off the oxidation layer. Next I used more aluminum polish on a soft cloth and buffed it out.
Between each step I wiped down the surface to remove any loose rust particles. If you don't clean them off they will scratch the chrome while you are polishing. I found out the hard way.
The tape keeps me from rubbing the paint off. I was hoping to get it a little cleaner but I think this will be alright. You can still see the pinholes.
After and before.
Take your time and experiment on a small area first. YMMV
Thanks for posting this. I was actually wondering if the chrome could be polished out. Mine doesn't need anything major. Doesn't even need anything minor. There's just some slight hazing in a couple areas. I could leave it be and be satisfied but I'm picky.

How about some kind of a "stick-on" matt black vinyl? Kinda like shelf paper only thicker vinyl stick-on. You can stick it on there then carefully trim off the access. Keep the chrome underneath for whatever may change in the future.

Jeff, you're a genius! There's a local digital printing shop that I'm tight with. Can't believe I didn't even think of that. I'll make it happen. Worst case scenario, I have to pull it off. My only concern is how well I can get it to stick in all the ridges.
Thanks for posting that Tomahawk. That cluster really turned out great from how it was. I'm going to have to try that to acouple of my clusters that have some rust spots on. Did you only use mothers aluminum polish for the whole thing?

Awesome idea Jeff not only can you get it matt black but endless other inlays as well to try out.

First I flaked off as much of the rust blotches as I could then I used Mothers with the aluminum foil ball and then more Mothers on a soft cloth to get it completely clean. I also tried some 3M Perfect-It #1 rubbing compound and that didn't seem to help or hurt the finish. I was very lucky that the finish wasn't too far gone.
