My DC 250 amp xp alternator just died today:' The frustrating part is that this lasted only 5 months, and my truck isn't my daily driver. I've e-mailed them and will call them in the morning. I will post on the outcome of this.

Uh oh... I have been keeping an eye on the DC Power 250HD, but with the horrible lead times, bad customer service and 2 dead alternators in this thread alone I definitely second guess it.

That sucks, there's been a few early failures lately with the DC alternators.
you'd think as long as it takes to build one....it would be built to last. Apparently that is not the case.
My stock 140, has charged 14.4 to 14.8 volts on the alternator positive cable since new. I ran in for 9 years before changing to the new Prestolite in my gallery. That is the charge set point on most alternators including my new Prestolite 230 amp. But once you run through the batteries, I get about 13.6 to 13.8 at the battery and only 13.2 at the OBD port. This is because the batteries lower/attenuate the voltage. Not because the alternator isn't working properly. I do notice now by OBD2 my alternator shuts down to 14.4 much quicker after a cold start as it brings the batteries up in a very short time now.
The failed DC Power units in this thread have me extremely curious as I've never seen one fail except when a customer inadvertently hooks up a ground wire to the charging post or something.
That said, I am not a fan of the SPX units. The XP series is by far superior in reliability. We stock the 185 OEM's, 190HD's (though are very temporarily out of these), the 250HD's, the 270XP's, and, of course, the new entrant, the 370XP's.
Had mine installed by a local performance shop that seam to know what they are doing, after install I had the dealer check it out (about 2 weeks later) and replace with my stocker since it wasn't putting out much.
Ed, I'm sure there's a ton of good ones out there but at this point I have lost interest in the brand. That's all I'm saying.

A few months ago, I planned on upgrading to a DC Power alternator in the future. Then I saw where a couple 6.0 owners had early failures....then I did a Google search....found some DC Power failures of other brand trucks and cars. That was enough to steer me away from buying one. I don't feel a $300 - $700 alternator should fail in weeks/months....
I bought a new 140 amp this week, and hope to install it soon. For $150 I'll have a new 140 amp, and my old (still working) 110 amp as a spare.
Very interesting. We have yet to see even one fail across the many hundreds that we've sold that wasn't DIRECTLY related to user installation error. I guess I'll look around the web some more and see what I can uncover.
The difficulty with this sort of thing is being sure that you are getting the complete story of what happened - sometimes even when the customer completely wants to be upfront with you (sometimes they don't even *realize* that they did something wrong).
I am far from saying that any product is perfect, don't get me wrong. It's just that outside of this thread I hadn't heard anything other than availability issues with their product that we've resolved by being a stocking distributor.

Maybe you're getting the good ones? I wish I knew what the deal was too, because I really wanted one.

I don't know what is going on. I've been running the 270XP in my Ex for pushing three years with no issues and been selling the DC Power product for about that long as well. Bizarre. Maybe just a bad batch as a result of a bad set of incoming parts?
