It's laying on the garage floor so I can't get my hands under there to ubolt and spit it. I didn't quite think that through lol, I'll probably unbolt it through the starter hole if I can tonight.
I dont know if you can get it from the starter bolt. There should be a provision on the driver side of the block that has a rubber plug in it to get the torque converter nuts off. You can turn the engine by the front crankshaft bolt. Do you have the intake manifold off?
Thanks! I found it makes it so much easier, didn't do all of them yet. I do have it off yes.
Cool. I was going to say if the intake was off, there is a hole in the middle of the valley that you might be able to get the nuts through. Either way, you are on the track of not making a mess lol.
Gents I'm on my way back from a business trip now and I have two weeks before I leave again. This weekends goal is to get the 4r100 and 5.4l finally separated and to work on the cummins as well as POR the remaining frame.
After researching my turbo set up I plan to run I found it would be best to stud the motor and in thing that I figured it's a good time to change the head gasket since the motor isn't in the truck. I'll be doing the following to the motor:
- arp studs
- milling the rocker stands
- 60lbs valve springs
- injectors (might wait until after the motor is installed)
I've been doing tons of reading on my flights and I feel like I am well prepared to get this done now I just need to buy a few tools to complete these tasks and get my parts in.
BTW......In you sig;
72 Dodge Charger 5.9l (In Restoration Currently)
Just a picky little point, but in 72 the charger would have been listed as a 360 2bbl, yes I know that is the same as 5.9l but we didn't label them as metric till much later

I didn't get any work on the cummins done but I got the frame painted with POR! I had to give up my hoist for my father-in-law to swap the motor in the wife's BMW so I won't be taking the head off the cummins until I get it back. Also I didn't separate the 5.4l and 4r100 because of the hoist but I got it on dollies and out of the way so I'm going to shift back to the truck rather than work on those again.
I also go a massive compressor! From my father in law for free that I am going to wire in and plumb for air tools. It will greatly help with getting things done faster now!
Yes, it is the 2 barrel carb, they didn't offer a 4bbl on that engine for that year but it was a common upgrade for the guys that couldn't afford to do the engine swap for the 383, 400 or all up for the 440. They actually offered that boat with a 225 slat six but I imagine the sales were pretty skinny, people wanting a small engine would opt for the 318 or 340. It was offered with the 426 Hemi but that is a rare beast.
72 is part of the B-body line that went from mid 60's to later 70's and 72 was the first year for the Rallye version that replaced the R/T and came out with the luxury SE that gave you the vinyl top and hidden headlights!!.......SO, which model you have and what tranny, auto, 3sp or 4sp? Love old Mopar Muscle!
We are building a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited, only year for that motor in the Grand with the heavy truck tranny. Put 6 grand in the motor in tranny, full build and pushing about 355hp but a buttload of toque for wheeling....Having a blast with it
Can't say I've ever seen a Charger with a 340 in it unless the later Super B's where built on Charger body's, My 70 Super B was a Coronet body with a 383.
340's where Mopar's small block performance engine and only came with 4 barrel carbs in all apps except the AAR Cuda and TA Challenger that had six pack carburation, my 73 Cuda had a 340 engine which was the last year of the 340, it was replaced by the 360 4 bbl engine in 74.
The old Feather Duster had a 340 and was fast. Chargers came common with 318, 383 and 440. There were some 225, 340, 360 and 426 models but it was uncommon and a lot of those were special order units. The 340 was a common engine in the mid bodies as you say. 360 was a good builder, especially the wedge but it was more costly to build than a 383 but more bullet proof. Most guys spending that kind of bank went to the 440. Friend had 2 SuperBirds with the 440 six pack, bitch to work on but way fun to drive. Also worked on a 71 340 Cuda and a 66 Baracuda. I had Ford and Mopar, lot of other friends had GM.
I've got a 4 speed auto in it, the tranny and motor came out of a drag car I'm not sure what tranny it is exactly but the 360 is out of another charger I believe, it didn't come with a 360. Also i believe it's just a. Saw model charger because it isn't the rallye and it's not an SE with the hideaway lights.
Also I apologize for the lack of updates on the truck guys been extremely busy at work, my company moved offices this week so I've been putting in crazy hours and haven't had time to get on my computer to get pics up yet.
Hey guys, wanted to give an update. I apologize again that i am not making much progress this year. It has been a big year for me between getting married, buying a house and having my company sold off. Work has been somewhat uncertain since the sale and our group of guys has been reduced by more than half so the traveling piece has gotten heavier on all of us and because of the uncertainty i am trying to save funds for the house vs the truck or any of my other projects. Hopefully things will pick up soon though and i can start getting everything back to the way it use to be.
Out of the heavy stuff now, good news (in a way) is that because i have been traveling so much i have not taken any holidays this year except thanks giving and like Easter. Because of that i will be taking the whole last week of the year off to use up my holiday time (from Dec 23-Jan 2) and my wife is working so i will be in the garage every day working on the truck so i plan to get a good amount done and even finally 3D print some pieces for the dash once i receive the cleaning kit for the printer (nozzle is clogged). I have aalso not been working on the motor or anything because my hoist is still at my father-in-laws shop so i cant lift anything lol.
