Well I started in on the 6.0 today. I like to share so I figured I'd start a another one of these 6.0 threads. I bought this truck about a month ago or so with a bad lifter. It is one of the rear 8 so of course the whole thing needs to be tore down for lots o fun.
Few things I noticed, oil in the turbo, broke up pipe, water in the power steering, clean coolant, clean trans fluid, and clean oil. The power steering fluid is taken care of simply from pulling the motor. The turbo will need a rebuild, I assume since it is a 6.0 the rebuild kit is 5 times more money than any other turbo rebuild kit on the market. The up pipe I can take care of when reassembling. So far nothing to bad, the truck ran absolutely great when driving it into the shop this morning, I think it will be a good one when all done.
Oh yeah, is off road diesel bad in a 6.0? lol
Couple quick pics before I run out into the shop again. I just came in to see how the torque converter bolts are gotten to.
The only exhaust leak I see is the flex section on the drivers side but I do agree there is a ton of soot.
Well 4 hours from driving the truck in to the motor on the ground and truck back outside. I need to clean up a table to lay the parts out on. This one might be apart for awhile so I can't put the parts on my welding table like I normally do.
Whats the story with egr systems now days with the 6.0? Is it better to do the upgraded tube coolers or best to do the delete? I am not a tuner user so if I did the delete I would leave the egr there and plugged in.
How are you supposed to get all those nuts back on without dropping them?
Since you had the cab up already, replace head bolts with studs. I wonder how difficult it is to take the studs off if you ever have to work under the heads...
I had a really difficult time taking studs of my gas GM 350 C.I engine to replace the rings.
an early "delete" and still my favorite was to simply cap/weld over the exhaust inlet and outlet for the EGR cooler so there was no way for the exhaust gases to enter the cooler. the coolant can still be circulated through the cooler or jumpered to bypass
it looks 100% stock and will pass any visual inspection
also, food for though regarding leaving the EGR plugged in.
it wasn't until late 2005, and all 2006+ models that got the newer PCM strategy. that 03/04 model you have may not have the craptastic PCM strategy that kills MPG's and power to gain injector buzzing
if you have the old strategy, the PCM doesn't look for the EGR. so unplugging the EGR won't throw a CEL only the 05+ models have the PCM looking for the EGR
Keep up the progress and photos. We love photos.
Also have you put a pin on the map yet?
Sean
Scuse me for butting in.......So you're saying off road diesel will not harm anything or set of any codes in the fuel system of a 6.0? specifically a 2007 6.0? I ask this because I live a few miles from the nearest fuel stop and in the winter months I will need to make a special trip there to fuel my truck.......BUT sometimes when plowing snow I will no doubt find myself running low and I DO have an off road fuel barrel for my equipment that, if I needed it would be nice to be able to use out of that barrel in a pinch. I know in some of the diesels it will shut them down but I DON"T know when that started to be implimented that is why I am asking now. Thanks in advance for input.

Really??? I had never heard that. Must be a color sensor of some kind?
Red diesel will have no adverse effect on the 6.0.
+1 on head studs - even if you do not want to run tunes.
Also, you should check heads for cracks and for flatness. Oh, I would change out the heater hoses and the degas bottom hose while they are easy to get to. Same with glow plugs and glow plug harness.
Like Sean - good pics - definitely can see the leak on the Y-pipe.
The turbo rebuild kit, like most 6.0L parts (except injectors and heads, lol), is reasonably priced at AutoNation White Bear Lake - do you need a part number?
Good point - I have not looked into the turbo bearings, etc availability at AN, but they can be had at the link below ($130 - $150). In my earlier post, I was only thinking of cleaning and gaskets, my bad.
