Gary, the one I was talking about has 4 relays in a straight line and mounts right behind the main power box. Right side under the hood spring.
Thats the one Ive been looking at. Was thinking of either mounting it out of the way on the radiator core support or under the dash. But as of now I havent even got to the point of ordering the hella composite headlights to complete the conversion.
Yes, I do have one of those - which Bruno got for me IIRC. But you don't want it under the dash. It should be under the hood and close to the battery and headlights to minimize the wiring you are going to have to run. You need a good source of power, and the battery-side solenoid stud is perfect for that. You need to connect to the headlight wiring to trigger the relays, and that wiring is easy to access at the headlight. And you need to wire to the headlights. So a spot on the fender or radiator support would be perfect.
I got the AEM wideband AFR gauge mounted today. It isn't wired yet, but at least it is where I want it. Here's what I see from my driving position. Note that you can see the AFR gauge as well as the aftermarket ones, although they are at the limit.
This shows how the wiring goes through the shroud, although it is a tight fit as I'd forgotten about where the instrument bezel hits the shroud. If I install this gauge in this position on Dad's truck I'll move it just a bit further aft to provide better clearance for the bezel.
And this shows where the wiring and hose goes along the top of the steering column and then up under the dash.
Hopefully tomorrow I'll get the wiring done and Rusty will be operable again.
Thanks, David. Realizing that the longer shrouds can be cut down and used in place of the shorter tilt variety has free me up to experiment with cutting and drilling on it. I got lucky on this first try that it is useable, but I also learned how to make it a better fit next time. Poor Rusty, always the step-child.
You know, Gary, after looking again at the photo of the installed AFR gauge and imagining another like-sized gauge on the opposite side of the steering column, my mind wandered back to 60's Mustangs with Ford's Rally Pac!!!
Yup, that's pretty close to it, for sure. But, I mounted that gauge on the left side as it interferes with viewing the smaller gauges on the right side. So going with two would cause a problem.
I did drive Rusty yesterday and discovered that everything works perfectly with the exception of the vacuum portion of the AFR gauge. Somewhere the line is crushed.
My bet would be under the steering column shroud. Find a piece of small diameter tubing [metal or rubber] and using adapters, splice for the part where it is being pinched.
