So am I crazy for piecing this together to try and maintain the ride quality or should I just but a lift? I have a Superduty with a Superlift 8" and it pretty much rides like crap I think unless I have a load on her.
I am running this kind of lift and the ride is great. Compared to stock, the ride is slightly firmer in front and about the same in back. It also does a great job towing heavy. In front I have V codes, a 4.5" ICON spring hanger kit and dual bilstein's with Caryt's valving. In the rear mod B codes and a 6" block. I ended up adding OUO traction bars to eliminate the slight axle wrap - my diesel is tuned with extra power - stock may not have axle wrap. I am very pleased with the results.

Exactly what I was hoping to hear.... What size tires are you able to clear??
Not sure if this should be a new thread or not, so I will start here. What is the point of modifying the B codes? Does it soften the F-250-ish ride a bit? Also, if my current springs are shot (riding on the bump stops with less than a qtr tank of gas), does it make sense to use those bottom two leafs? A sad note on my attention to detail... I thought I had more clearance from the stops. But when I compared the two sides, realized that the drivers side stop was missing the top segment of rubber! WTH!!! Thanks for the help. This forum rocks and has been abundantly helpful! Looking to do the full V/Mod B this week if I can get the parts! Big trip with trailer this weekend to New England. Procrastination sucks!

V's with B's on the back and stock blocks would have you riding 'front high'. The modded B's adds a little height to keep the ride level if you re-use your stock rear blocks.
How is the ride impacted though? Seems it would be easier to just throw a bigger block in there if it is purely stance/posture. I'm going to go with the herd on this and do the modification. Just curious if the difference is in the normal ride comfort/quality, handling control, or a combo of the two. basically, as far as I can figure from the years of posts here, the mod is a happy medium between soccer mom stock excursion and super rough f-250 knock your fillings out. A little stiffer, but not uncomfortable for the family. That about sum it up? Thanks again, everybody for continuing to reply to these posts over the years. Definitely helpful to the new owners of these older vehicles!
Yes, it does add some capacity to the rear, but I wouldn't say it makes it more stiff when unloaded...the added leaves really come into play the more weight you put on it. For me a) I did t want to buy the taller blocks and b) I run with a good 250-300lbs in the back all the time, so it made sense.

Not truly accurate because when it's all said and done, after swapping the springs you will have the exact same suspension as Ford put on the 250/350 4x4 trucks.
So if you think the 250/350 suspension is truly a "knock your fillings out" ride (it's not, by the way...not sure how you came to that opinion), then I'd think twice about doing the mod.

Stewart
But Stewart...doesn't the back seats, side, roof, side glass etc. of the Excursion weigh more than the stock F250/350 bed? I would think that additional weight would soften the "stock" 250/350 ride a bit, wouldn't it? That is how I interpreted the ride difference...how when you have a little weight in a truck it softens it a bit vs completely unloaded.

I think the difference is negligible but honestly, I wasn't looking at it from that point of view. I was thinking technically, as in, it's exactly the same suspension.
The Knock your fillings out perception came from a test ride I took in a 350 (single rear wheel). It was incredibly hard. I have been in a few 250's that friends have owned and didn't think it was too bad. Time to get busy. Thanks!!!

The other part of that equation is the fuel tank in the back, where the 250/350's fuel tanks are in front of the rear wheels (saddle). Not only that, but my F350 only had a 27 gal tank if I remember right and the 250 was at 35 gal.
