We have a 302 and i had imagined doing that but with a single cab 2wd it just doesn't seem worth it. If it was the extended cab version i might be more adept to try it.

And matt, they actually don't have 5th... it's a 4 speed trans. They don't have much more than 50 hp in their little motors and really aren't speed machines but their classics and i love the look of them. The fact that it is air cooled eliminates worrying about coolant issues. No power steering means no need to worry about ps fluid and in some cases manual brakes means no brake fluid to worry about. Just need to make sure the valves get adjusted every time i do an oil change.

I had an Air Cooled VW repair shop for a few years Dylan. They are a cool little car with a lot of potential and an awesome aftermarket following. I built a 200 HP out of a Dual Port 1600 cc that had about 60 HP stock. That one got the fenders trimmed for bigger tires and looked like an all steel Baha Buggy. My suggestion is that if ya don't know a lot about them try to stay away from the later Super Beatles. They are a different breed of Bug in many ways. More expensive to work on IMHO. The late 60's and very early 70's have the strongest engines with the better HP. Anyway if ya PM or email me I'll help ya all I can. My E-Mail is papa772 At Yahoo. I would love to help ya with one.

Sweet thanks! My family also has experience with these plus we have a bug guru in our neighborhood too. My brother had a super beetle. It was cool but i do like the older ones. The issue is, they are insanely expensive here and if they are cheap then it is a shell with rust holes everywhere. Now what do you mean by later super beetles? I thought they were only 2 years that were made both in early 70s.

Unfortunately this is the one i had my eye on. It happens to be a super beetle too.

1973 SUPER BEETLE VW BUG

I figured i might be able to "entice" him with the trade of my Ranger. It looks like it is in bad shape but so does TGM, i think i can smooth out the body and slap some orange/black paint.

Oh haha, yeah the ranger hits 5th easily. I can get it up to 80 in under 30 seconds if i tried. Even with it's old bones. unfortunately things have aged and worn out so it gets a vibration at 50-60, The wheels can't be balanced due to it's age, but the drive line might have issues. I would go to say it is faster than my bronco even.

Oh wow, I just re curved my distributor ( I recommend you doing that it makes a difference if you haven't already, it cost me 399 pennies for new springs lol) and put bigger metering rod springs to get rid of that stumble, and man that thing has quite a bit of get up and go, even going slow holding it in 2nd gear lol. Even before I put the new intake on it glued me to my seat with some issues, now it's even better.

Well i read up on some instructions for doing a re-curve and it doesn't look very simple. There are a lot of things they mention that i don't really understand.

Have you done it on your bronco? it only took me 20 minutes and I took my distributor out. I just got to the springs and changed them, cleaned and lubed the parts and put it back in and it seems to be working like a demon.

Well, it's easy enough and it really helped how my engine revs and accelerates, I noticed my exhaust doesn't smell as strong either anymore. It usually adds a MPG or two by installing the light distributor advance springs, it gets rid of the old retarded smog springs. Some cases if you hear a ping after installing 2 light springs you probably need to add the old medium spring to the secondary side to slow advance a little bit. But my engine seems to be pretty much impossible to make ping except on start up, I don't get that lol. Also excuse my ignorance back there, I don't know where my brain has been today lol.

Haha, I took pictures, makes it real easy to explain.

That's the spring kit that cost me $3.99 at O'reillys

The distributor assembled, should look identical to yours inside.

The old springs to the left, as you can see they really hold the mechanical advance back causing an engine retard.

The guts of the distributor with the old springs in.

The new springs installed.

Pretty much all the new springs do is it makes the mechanical advance, advance the ignition timing faster. Resulting in a quicker and smoother revving engine. Usually helps out with a MPG or two as well. Especially if the emissions junk are gone. It only took me 20 minutes to do all that, you can do it without removing it from the engine too. But it's a lil harder haha.
