Yeah I was leading a massive (well about 15 trucks) Humvee drivers training event today. Just after we fueled up it hit us like a monsoon. Made having a rookie driver behind the wheel that much more stressful.
Is it pretty hard to drive a Humvee? It seems like it would be close to a regular vehicle just bigger and heavier. I don't think i could back one up into a walmart parking lot until i drove it around first.
Humvees aren't any harder to actually drive then a regular truck, however depending on the model the visibility is bad to none. I start people driving on a soft top model with no doors or back, all open. This is so they have plenty of visibilty and can get used to how wide the truck is.
After they get used to that then I'll go to a standard Humvee with doors and a hard top hatchback. This really makes them have to use mirrors as there is no rear window and the door windows are only about 12" x 14"
Only when someone has been driving Humvees for a good while will I put them in an armored truck, the door windows shrink to about 8"x8" and the windshield gets a bit narrower all around with massive A pillars. I'll snap a pic for you guys later.
The hardest thing to get used to is that EVERYONE will be looking at you as you go by, so pressure is on not to make a mistake. The width usually isnt too big an issue as I tell them to stay fairly close (not on) to the center line and use you mirrors. Side roads are not for beginners as they are generally narrower and have no markings.
Once you get once to the trucks physical size it becomes second nature and you can drive normally without even thinking about it.
O and I wouldn't exactly say high-powered...even the high end armored Humvees only have a GM 6.5 Turbo
My heart skipped when I saw the words Junk Cars...I was a tow truck driver during cash for clunkers. Made my eyes tear up seeing what they did to the old cars.
Boy do i wish i could try my skills at driving a humvee, i think i could do ok at it. Then again when i got TGM i was afraid to drive on the freeway to get home, it felt like i had less than a foot on either side.
