Jason, Glad to hear you got the trip in and just have this as another traveling adventure story now (with pictures too!). It is very rare to hear of a later model 2V V-10 popping a plug, but I guess your overheat did contribute to that happening. Just curious what torque spec you used on those plugs. And I need to look at replacing my serp belt, I'm at 125K miles now and we are on the road away from home if we are in the EX.
Good question on the torque spec. I have been wrenching on engines for years, so for most of my work, I use an internal torque wrench (i.e., “feel”). I had it “set” to approximately 20 ft-lbs.
Glad you made it home safely. Do you plan on replacing that Heli coil? It's been my experience that's the beginning of the end. If I remember correctly Ford recommended not repairing those with Heli Coils. Long story short in my case a repair using a coil was made by the P.O. of my Ex and ended up destroying the cylinder head. It has something to do with the steel coil causing a hot spot in the aluminum head.

Thanks for the warning. Can you point me to a product and/or thread showing what is required for this?

If you find yourself back in there maybe goose them a little closer to 30 ft/lbs for better longevity.
I think Ford's recommended fix kits for plug inserts is Lock-N-stitch or Time-Sert (not sure about the spelling on either one) both have pretty good reputations.
Silverton,Co boon-docking trip with 400 watts of solar.
Had a blast will be going back next year. No Excursion hope y'all let me keep posting... The view from our site. a ittle fishing hole we found. Daily solar production from 4x 100w panels. This was the game changer.
As of 1PM today I am officially unemployed, refinery closed down and everyone has been laid off. And we are going on a two week vacation to NY Friday! .
Just finished installing the new springs, axles and 2 new Sailun tires on the TT this morning.
.... Overheating the manifold must have caused one of the plugs to loosen a bit (you know what's coming). After driving 6-ish hours with no issue, we pulled up to our overnight campsite, and I shut off the engine. I realized I wanted to move the trailer a bit, so I started it up, and the plug blew out. I unplugged the injector and coil the next morning, and we had an oh-so-pleasant 5 hour drive home. .... I had a helicoil installed and now all is well again. I replaced the rest of the plugs and boots while I was at it, since I had just over 60k on the plugs. ....
I read on another forum about an OEM plug blowing at 68k.
Torque is important,so be sure to torque the plugs to around 25 ft/lbs.
I've also read the helicoil repair won't last.
I did a Time-Sert repair on our #3 and it has been fine for 30k.
Time-Sert carries a special insert for heads that have had a helicoil, but I don't know if other repair kits offer that.
Checkout the info/videos on their website.
Give Time-Sert a call, they were very helpful the 2 times I've talked to them.

Tom, This is good & bad news. Make the best of the downtime. Good luck with the job search, when you decide to do so!

Thanks Prakash, my Honey-do List is huge and seems to grow every time I look at it, I'll be working much harder here at home than I was in my control room job at the plant! After a few months of this I might want to go back to work!

Yeah. We all need a break from the honey-do list. That one never ceases to grow I keep Golf, Jeep upgrades and Excursion work as the alternatives to get a break

Hey future Full-Timer! Good luck on your search, I imagine the work from anywhere jobs or work camping is part of the search.

Full-timing is definitely our plan in about 2 years, my Bride can retire then. Until then I am not really searching but will go back to my job IF the refinery gets a deal worked out with a prospective buyer, otherwise just knocking out the backlog of projects here and selling off a bunch of vehicles to make selling the house and downsizing possible.

Selling stuff and downsizing will be our greatest challenge. I am trying to convince my bride we cant keep it all. I think we have compromised we will own a landing spot in the Western part of NC, I would like 20 acres of woodland that I could eventually parcel to the kids. We would like to have a small house on the property with RV hookup. I think she is worried that being on the road all of the time will wear on her and she wants a place to call home. For my 9 cars (for now), boat and multiple trailers I will have a metal building with alarm system, my biggest concern is securing the property while we are gone on an extended trip or snowbirding. Our timeframe is undecided as I still have a teenager at home, one in college and elderly parents nearby.
