I found one short article about the safety switch. Without the computer, they did use the safety switch. There are only two wires to use so if they are now touching and you have the problem, open the two wires. In other words do the opposite from what they are now to test your drive function. We don't know if it affect the run if the wires are not correct along witht he P and n start function. Easy test. Maybe nothing. but???

I got nowhere with it. We got to thinking about it. The computer doesn't know whether its in park or drive. The transmission mounted safety switch isn't hooked up to anything. So I don't necessarily think its the neutral safety switch, but the fact that the ecm isn't getting a signal.
ok just checking. without being there and being part of the installation and such, it's just tough to know what ya got goin on there. i wish I was able to help ya more, but...maybe the guys on your other link might chime in...i will keep thinkin and watchin this thread, if I come up with any other possibilities i will jump in. keep us posted Joe..
Alright, I'll definitely have to look into the neutral safety switch issue. Now I just have to labor over my wiring diagrams to find out what wires I need to jumper;, since the interior harness was just cut out of my engine harness before I bought it. Thanks for the link, you've been extremely helpful yet again. Hopefully one day I can pay it forward.
Unless someone on FTE is a tranny mechanic I can only think of two ways to use the table shown. Take a meter to the salvage yard and test the Neu safety switch or go by a transmission shop and ask the people that overhaul them. I would want the safety switch on the shifter. chuck
not sure if it is to be grounded or what? here is a link for wiring diagram.
it shows to be grounded. but I also read about it needing a fused 12 volt source. I don't know? I am still not understanding why you are trying to avoid using the neutral safety switch. seems like if you hooked it up as original then this code 67 would go away. i sent that video link to ya cause it talked about the surging idle issue...now you mentioned a backfiring through the intake and not sure what thats all about.
no problem on the helpin ya, but not sure that i am being any help at this point!
I remember you saying that you harness was cut up, and you didn't know where the neutral safety switch was supposed to connect. is that why you are trying to bypass?
Yeah, the guy I bought the engine/harness from just cut through the harness going to the dash right at the firewall, so I have no interior harness, therefor no neutral safety switch. I'm not opposed to actually hooking it up, but I'm just trying to get the thing running at this point.
