So I bought a fuel injected 302 from an 88 t-bird to put in my 55 f100. I got it in and wired, it starts and idles great, but whenever I give it any gas it just dies. It kind of bogs down until it just stops running. If I barely feather the throttle the truck will rev up to some extent. I'm at a loss here. I can't find any vacuum leaks anywhere, I was initially thinking maybe its the tps, but I don't want to go start replacing random sensors and just Chase my tail here. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Fuel rail should have pressure check port. Pressure of 38-42 lbs with key on-engine off. 5 to 10 lb drop at idle. Should hold constant pressure for a least 5 to 10 minutes after shut off.
Don't know your install requirments but??? Pressurized or not fuel tank./ in tank or in line pump and filters/ Old filters or new/ installed both fuel lines proper size including return line/ engine wiring harness t-bird or aftermarket/ all sensors from t-bird transfered to truck and accounted for and plugged in/ All ignition tune-up conditions ok/ brake vacuum leak/ did you use the tbird catalytic converter, old has same symptions. Was the problem when tranny in drive or netural etc. chuck
I would also suspect a fuel pressure issue, but you have checked that. Maybe clean the throttle body, seams to me there is a passage that tends to carbon up on the 5.0, but that usually causes a high idle. Did you hear it run when you got it?
I am gonna be dealing with the same thing in time. Awesome that you got it to start! hurdle #1...I assume you wired up your own setup but double check your pinouts, wiring, etc. lot of stories out there about "oops had a wire in wrong pinout, etc. I can hardly wait to experience this myself
good luck and let us know.
I am sure you have worn out fordfuelinjection.com right? if you haven't then bookmark it, its good stuff!
88 t-bird...speed density or maf? I assume speed density...
My next check would be the TPS, it can be checked with a meter.
It's an in line fuel pump, tapped in a return line and a tank breather vent. We used the stock tank hard line then used some 5/16" fuel injection hose for the rest. It's the stock t bird harness except the guy I got it from cut it where it goes to the dash harness. There are no cats, we're just running 2 1/2" straight pipes with muffler to the rear bumper. I think all of the sensors are accounted for, but there are just so damn many.
I didn't bypass the security system, I just wired up power to the ecu and we were off to the races.
It has a map, not a maf, so I'm not sure if that's the issue.
hey guys. dont mean to jack the thread but im looking to put my 302 in my 53. right now its got a 292 in it but im not a fan of the yblocks. any info on how im going to do the switch would be good.

You said inline fuel pump...if you have an inline high pressure fuel pump you have to have a low pressure pump before the high pressure pump. the high pressure pumps are not able to pull fuel in volume. if you have it setup below the tank so that the tank gravity feeds then you should be okay, but if its above the tank trying to pull fuel, that won't work. now earlier you said that you kept pressure so I assume that you are setup right. but its hard to troubleshoot from this end without knowing what your setup is.
MAP tells me that you are running a speed density EFI/ bank fired efi whatever your terminology is. basically its not SEFI/ MAF and what you have is basic EEC IV EFI so its not real complicated. At work gotta go, I will check in later today! hope ya got it figured out by that time! I am doing a similar setup. just 351W
I don't have a low pressure pump and the Inline is above the tank. I'll double check the pressure next chance I get to work on the truck, which should be this week. Life has a way of slowing progress down a bit.
so, when you checked pressure.. did you check WHILE trying to go above idle? if the pump is working, and the regulator is working, then the pressure should hold.. the regulator will clamp closed to accommodate for off idle demand surge
I'd rip off the Fuel injection put on an adapter and 4Barrel go back to Duraspark II deleting the computer and call it a night... I just did this with an 85 302. There is too much to go wrong in all that wiring.
