Yep, at this stage of the game, a compression test would be a great idea.
yeh, but it was running before the intake swap, so, overall it should be good,
once you match the distro and valve timing. I doubt they could hurt it that fast
Okay, so we put the engine at TDC on the compression stroke, tried starting it and it hickups sometimes, but won't start, and it looks like the 4th of July on top of my carb with all the flames/backfiring shootin out of it. When we stabbed the distributor, we put the rotor at #1 while the engine was at TDC.
While I'm turning the engine over, Andrew is rotating the distributor to try and find a spot where it will even kind of run, it seems to help a bit, but not enough to get it to run at all. We have the PCV vent on the carb just open to the atmosphere, that shouldn't keep it from starting as that's just to make things more efficient.
I'm using a Mr. Gasket fuel pump that pushed 5-7 PSI. Yet again, we're at a loss here.
I've been following this thread from the beginning and am sorry to hear you couldn't got the EFI straightened out but concerning your firing order be sure it wired to the correct firing order , there are two for the SBF engines- Ford Windsor (289, 302, 5.0, 5.0HO, 351) Firing Order & Cylinder numbers
Also make sure by rotating the crank one way then the other and watching the distributor rotor that you don't have excessive play in the timing chain and sprockets.
Fords are a bit persnickety to timing chain variations.

oh man! I had forgotten the firing order change on the later model smallblocks.. good catch..
Alright, we're back! So, when I googled 302 firing order, the HO version came up, I didn't know they changed it. So, we redid the firing order, restabbed the distributor just to be safe, and the truck started right up. Starts and idles great, got the TV cable on and adjusted as per the 1:1 ratio, drove down the street and it won't shift out of first gear...I tried taking more slack out of the TV cable to no avail. I don't want to loosen the cable because I don't want to fry my transmission.
So, we're making progress, The truck starts, idles and drives under it's own power, now we need to figure out why it won't shift. GAAAARRRGGGHHHH!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the help, guys.
Joe and Andrew.
The TV cable has to be adjusted with a Pressure gauge hooked up to the transmission . Properly adjusted the line pressure should be 0 at idle. It's best to have a qualified Transmission Shop do this Procedure if your unfamiliar with it. It's a delicate procedure and if not done right serious internal damage will result to the trans.
before the pressure guage issue, did the tranny shift out of first gear since joe bought it? is that an inherited problem from why the thunderchicken was taken off the road? and Smitty49 is correct about the TV pressure, at least i know that if its not set correctly, you can burn up a good tranny quick...
We don't know if the tranny ever shifted out if first. It never went fast enough, lol. I was planning on having a shop adjust it, I need to get it there first. On the up side, the engine seems to run strong. So that's good.

yep, I lost one in about 10 miles. Thought it was adjusted properly... Not

I'm glad to hear that we've made great progress. Here's a link for the TV adjustment-use at your own risk(in conjunction with the pressure gauge??).
So we set the pressure at idle, took a drive down the street and the tranny still doesn't shift out of first. When I put it into R or D, it goes solidly into gear, but when going down the road under heavy throttle or very light throttle it just stays in first. I'd really like to keep the AOD but I'm worried that it might be a bum transmission. I have a good C4 in the bed...There goes my OD and saved gas mileage...
