December Chat Thread
My comp is starting to **** me off now though.
I can't download a torrent of any kind, and do surf the web at the same time.
It jams up, freezes up, stutters, spits at me, and does everything else. Can't even go alt f4 crazy on Firefox to close it. Don't know what the problem is, but I wish it would resolve itself.
What I really wish for, was windows 7. If only I was still a student.. I could get it for 30 bucks
I spent part of my evening fighting with iTunes. It spazzed out on my computer, so I transferred all my music, videos, etc. to my laptop and synced my iPod with that. And wouldn't you know, as I'm transferring files, I log out then back in to the iTunes Store and everything's back to normal on my computer. Well, cept for the fact that iTunes has apparently upgraded itself and changed settings I didn't want changed. And now it skips if my CPU usage pegs to 100% like if I'm loading a web page. But it's been handled, so all's well.

Yes, but then you get into falsification of a police report.

Seriously though, if I ever get the chance, I am going to put together a Kaiser Jeep (or J-Series truck if I can't find the Kaiser version) and it's going to have a Detroit. Probably a 6V53T if I can find one.
It'll be fun to pull up to lights next to Cummins Dodge trucks and let 'em have a listen to how a diesel oughta sound.

Now if I were planning an engine swap for a Ford, I'd be looking at a 4.0L I6 out of a Jeep...those are tough little motors that get decent mileage. I've wondered how it'd handle being in a pickup...
I wonder if they'll give it to me on my smarts alone? lol
K, to answer everything:
@Josh I have an exact copy of my main music library on my laptop now, and because of that, I can sync with either it or my computer and get the same result. Since I have several iTunes Store-purchased files on my iPod, I had to authorize the laptop to manage the iPod, but that just required entering my Store info. I synced with my laptop and none of my app icons or settings changed from how I had them set up when synced with my computer. Though I have seen cases where syncing with different computers wiped out entire iPod libraries, including purchases. :\
@Josh (again) Does your computer act up when you don't run your torrent software? First thing I'd do is run an antivirus program and an antispyware program, and take care of anything that comes up. Then I'd try different torrent programs and see if you notice any change. I know this will probably sound silly, but when's the last time you restarted your computer?
@bill I hate it when crazy stuff like that happens too, but it gives me something to do. :P
@bill (again) I wish I had that Jeep. Kaiser Jeep M715. Imagine that one in the pic with a big, unpainted exhaust stack coming out behind the cab, with an old-fashioned flapper on top like an old semi. And sounding like this:

It can't handle it for some reason

I've never dealt with torrents so I'm not sure what kind of CPU usage is normal, but I do know that Photoshop is a memory hog. Next time your system acts up, open up Task Manager and check what your memory usage is for various programs including Photoshop, and also see what memory you have free. You might be running out of memory. Also if you're multi-tabbing a lot in Firefox, that takes memory too.
I think if you make sure it's free of viruses and whatnot, and clear out your temporary internet files, cache, and clean up your registry (I use CCleaner for all of those except antivirus/antimalware), you'll notice at least some improvement. Also, I've worked on computers in the past that, once I got rid of unnecessary junk in startup and whatnot, they ran considerably better. I myself only have 3 non-Windows icons in my notification area, two of which are for my antivirus.
I'm hoping to put together a system built around a 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 sometime in early 2010...I'll probably have a hard time pegging the CPU on that, lol.
I have done it before and I can not remember how.
EDIT: Its windows XP BTW.
I was just watching youtube, clicked on a police chase vid and I got rickrolled.
I have 56 processes that launch every time I start the computer and I have to use task manager to shut some of them down. How do I get into the menu for that?
@Grant Go to Start > Run... and type "msconfig". Go to the "Startup" tab in the window that comes up, and uncheck what programs you don't want running upon startup. You'll want to do a little research first and be sure what each program does, so that you don't end up disabling something important. As a reference, I run a modest system and I have 33 processes running at startup, some of which are from my antivirus, and some are associated with iTunes. After a fresh XP Pro install, I've had as few as 15-20 processes running.
Something I've found out is that in Vista, disabling hard drive indexing will speed up your computer by quite a bit. What indexing does is maintain an index of all files on the hard drive for faster searching. It pretty much runs your hard drive all the time though. I disabled indexing on my laptop (AMD Turion64 X2, 1.8GHz dual core), and it sped it up noticeably. The hard drive light went from flashing almost constantly to only flashing when it was necessary to access the drive.
In other news (lol), I went to a pawn shop in Waco today to look for Kirbys...didn't find any, but I did find like six older Dearborn gas and LP gas heaters. They appeared to all be relatively salvageable (I would love to get all of them, fix them up, then give them away or sell them cheap to people who need them), and some of them even had thermal valves that cut off gas flow if the pilot light goes out. They were priced pretty cheaply too, with one for $20.
I have a natural gas Dearborn in my dining room, and despite its size (about knee-high to me or so), it heats three rooms to a comfortable temperature, and it's not even turned all the way up.
Oh, and I got that Dearborn for free, when I helped a guy set up his TV.
