That's one big heatsink....what you runnin?

I managed to get a 24-bit SB Live! Value card (I think it's the Value one) out of a computer I was given along with a load of other used computers. I was running a Sound Blaster PCI128 (read: Ensoniq AudioPCI) before. WHAT AN UPGRADE! Audio quality improved drastically with the "new" card. Has 4.1 (or 5.1, not sure) capabilities too.

I'm gonna have to pick up some sort of PCI video card at some point so I can disable the onboard video and get some better video performance. In Windows AND Linux.

Oh and btw Ctubutis, do you know how to set things up where a computer running Windows and Linux will use Ntldr instead of GRUB?

Amd Athalon 64 4200. 2.20 ghz, I can overclock it to 3.0, but I see no reason to stress it like that.

I'll have to get a reading for all the temps one day, I know for a fact that the heatsink is drastically helping in the 2% cpu usage that I get when playing FSX.

Oh, also. I'm only on the 32 bit operating system right now. I'll have windows 7 on by next week, 64 bit. I don't know how long the computer will be able to put up with the extra work load, but I'm hoping there won't be any problems.

My card is PCI express, I love it. Beats AGP and PCI any day.

@86bigred Indeed. It takes an extraordinary person to make that kind of sacrifice.

@Josh http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

I run Speedfan in startup so it's automatically running in the system tray when I log into Windows. I'm on a Dell so I don't get any readings on CPU, fan speed, etc....but my C: drive puts out a temp reading, so Speedfan displays it.

That drive was running about 109F when I got it, but then I stuck one of my 80mm Rosewill case fans in front of it, and the temp dropped about 10-20F.

Oh and when I was messing around with an AMD Sempron system I was given (ended up bluescreening on me), and I put my hard drive back in my old 750MHz Athlon system, I actually got a number of temp readouts in Speedfan.....til I rebooted, then it was back to motherboard temp only. >_<

EDIT: My laptop runs Vista Basic fine on a 1.8GHz AMD Turion64 X2 CPU with a gig (or so it says) of RAM....I wouldn't think a 2.2GHz would have too much trouble with 7. Then again, I'm running a Celeron. :P

Oh and I'd use my old AGP Radeon card in this computer, but alas, all I have are a couple of PCI slots.....someday I'll build myself a budget computer and I'll have PCI-E and SATA and whatnot. Shoot, I could probably build something decent for under $300 if I shop around.

Ewwww. Speedfan :P I never liked it.

I have monitoring software on my computer.

Good Luck with the PCI cards, they aren't the greatest, but when it's all you have, it's all you have.

Fair enough. I like to run the simplest setups possible (I hate lag caused by bloated software), so it works for me. lol, first thing I do after a Windows setup is turn off various effects to eliminate as much CPU load as possible.

Cool. What do you use?

Thanks. I do think it'll be at least somewhat better than the onboard video. In truth, the onboard video works fine, but I do notice a difference with the CPU load during video playback compared to when I was running that Sempron with my ATI Radeon 9200 (AGP) card.

I have this one video that's super high quality and 60fps, and on the Sempron with the ATI, I could watch it with about 50% CPU load. On this computer with onboard video, it usually pegs the CPU and isn't even watchable.

Another comparison, my laptop with onboard ATI video chokes on that video just a little.

lol

I need to pull all my custom wiring I've put in over the years and rerun new wire, color-coded this time....and when I do that I'll be soldering connections instead of using butt connectors. Heatshrink time, oh yea.

I have about six hours before I gotta run up to HEB and Walmart to straighten up and stock some shelves, so I think I'll take some of that time to get my carb apart and started soaking in carb bath....darnit, I want to get it DONE!

Oh and Josh, you might could clean up the power wires for your drives and such by wrapping each set of wires in electrical tape...(shoot, I might have to do that myself, I like that idea)...I don't think that would hurt anything.

lol yep. Or Hispanics Eat Better, either one. If you've been to Texas, you understand. :P

That's an awesome video! I thought you were just being sarcastic, lol. That's a very interesting idea, I think it could work!

My only gripe is that you're stuck if the electronics mess up. On an old Ford pickup, you can still drive it even if there are electrical problems.

Yep! Born and bred. Born in God's country - San Antonio. Moved up to the God-Forsaken part of Texas (DFW) when I was 13. Been here ever since. I remember thinking when they called Henry Cisneros the "minority" mayor of San Antonio, that Somebody couldn't count for s**t!
It's one of the reasons I'm a poor carpenter instead of a prosperous one. There are Taco joints and Mercados all around me now. My church has even added a Spanish service. I'm surprised they haven't changed the name of "Wal-Mart to "Juan-Mart". And Target or K-Mart? Forget about it! We got the Alamo, they got everything else.
The Pawn shop where I go now plays Spanish music on the week-ends.
All this in a town called "White" Settlement.
