You can use it without service?

Yep. If you take the sim card out, it can be used as an ipod, and then later upgraded to a phone by getting a contract with pretty much any carrier.

Will I still have wireless internet access capabilities?

I will admit, getting an iPhone used would be a fair bit cheaper than buying a new Touch...plus it has a built-in speaker too.

I don't have to jailbreak it, do I?

No jailbreaking required, you will have WIFI capabilities, and all other features such as GPS (3G and 3GS models only) and what ever ells the iPhone comes with.

Huh. I'd think the GPS would depend on the phone signal...

I wonder if I could get it from AT&T or something, for cheap like you did, but then just not get service?

Me too. I just got in about 1/2 hour ago. The 3 hours commuting wore me out as much as the 14 hours working.

No, if you buy it from AT&T you have to get the contract. and the GPS from what I've experiened, does not depend on the cellphone signal.

and also, you still get a signal, no matter if you have a simcard in or not, you just don't get a service unless the simcard is activated.

Mine are getting rusty. It happens with the older vehicles. They don't get as much lube on them as they used to.

The GPS function just receives signals from the satellites. No send side, just software.

Interesting. I'll look into this....I like cheap

I got to thinking, I'd get a camera too, since it has one built-in.

Thanks for all the info!

No problem. I had an iPod touch at 1 point, then I decided "well I have AT&T, so why not get the benefit of both" and sure enough, I got myself the iPhone. Loved it ever since.
