November Chat Thread
@ctubutis Tell me about it. I think it was in 2008 or early 2009 that I had Xubuntu 8.04 or something like that installed on my previous computer (AMD Athlon 750MB, 320MB RAM, running the ATI card), and my problem was not in the video, but the actual CPU. It was super snappy in XP Pro on the same computer, but in Xubuntu, I was pegging the CPU every time I loaded a page in Firefox, plus DVD video playback was choppy. I tried using Fluxbox and Openbox window managers instead of Xcfe, and I got somewhat better performance. Right now I'm running plain ol' Gnome.
I'll do some reading up on this. I think I can figure something out...my dad was a computer technician, and I learned quite a bit from him.

I might try that too. It would just add an entry for 8.04 to the GRUB Bootloader I already have from 9.10, correct?
Thanks for all the info and help.

Oh and just cuz I remembered it:
Months ago, I was given a 2GHz AMD Sempron and I put 512MB RAM in it. I installed my ATI card and booted XP Pro. I was able to play a 60fps, super high-quality MP4 video with only ~50% CPU usage, when my dual-core laptop (with onboard video) would choke on it now and then. This computer won't even play it well enough to watch.
I woulda kept using the Sempron, but I think the motherboard was bad and it kept blue-screening on me. Linux installs wouldn't even touch it.

This stupid Oil light in my truck confuses the hell out of me.
I can't tell what the hell is going on.
I read the dipstick, it said add oil, so I added oil. Checked it again, it was 1mm below the top of the safe line. let it run, checked again, and it had dropped another 1mm. So i went on.
I drove for 2 miles, and i heard a hissing type noise, pulled over, because the oil light was steady lit while I was cruising at 45mph. I check the oil again, and now it's up on the 3rd coil of the dipstick. I have no clue how, I didn't even have that much oil in my possession. so what do I do next?
I panic, that's what.
I get under the truck, (at a private schools parking lot) and begin to drain oil into one of the empty oil jugs I had. filled the jug 3 qts, then checked the oil again. now it's down to the 1st coil on the dipstick.
I added no more than 1qt to the oil the first time, how the hell does it get that overfilled in the first place?
anyone have any Ideas as to what I should do?
I had to limp it home, the oil light was lit the entire way. I heard knocking the first time I started it after draining oil, but I heard no knocking from the engine bay as I limped home (2 mile drive max)
It's parked now until I can get help with this, and if I can't fix it. Well then I will pay for someone from FTE to come and fix it haha.

don't try to use the same partition(s) already being used by 9.10 (if you
want to keep the 9.10 installation).
filter and check for the presence of water/anti-freeze/gasoline. Check your
coolant level, too.
If there's gas in your oil (smell it) it's prolly your fuel pump; if there's water in
your oil, you've got issues - just shoot it and put it out of its (your) misery.

Install an aftermarket oil pressure gauge, maybe using a brass T so you can
run 'em both at the same time.
Been seeing you talking about your oil pan leaks, are you sure the problem isn't
the valve cover gaskets?
I rebuilt my engine just over one year ago and I determined that my leak is
coming from the side of the oil pan where the dipstick tube attaches to it. It's
exceedingly difficult to get to (headers don't help any) and I was using three
different wrenches in order to turn that damn nut (attaching tube to pan)
something like 1/8th turn each time.
Turns out that's NOT my problem, the leak is, in fact, through the four small
holes occupied by the rivets holding the female end of the dipstick tube's
connection onto the oil pan.
With everything being clean & freshly painted and with brand-new fluids, I can
easily "wash it & watch it."
Next time I change my oil, I'm gonna scrape away the paint around those four
rivets, clean everything up really well, and do my best to seal it up with RTV or
JB Weld or something similar.
I've got a leak coming from the transmission input shaft and dripping from the
bottom of the bell housing. The transfer case leaks into the aluminum
transmission extension. The rear axle leaks from the pinion shaft, the front axle
leaks from an unknown location.
*sigh*

replacement, anyway) you'll need to crawl under there and look at it. I have a Borg Warner
T18 but some have a NP variant (I think it's the 435 model) which looks very similar.
They're both what are commonly known as "top loaders" as the shifter is inserted directly
into the top of the unit, there is no linkage anywhere.
My T18 has a PTO cover on the passenger side, not sure about the other trannies.
This might help you:

EDIT: There MIGHT have been one other possibility, too, but I might be remembering
about an automatic variant... something called a RUG? Is that an auto?
Now, about the gaskets, I will hopefully get those replaced when I get the new filter. but I do have a slight problem with that.
The idiot PO broke one of the bolts off in the head, so now I get to deal with that.
THIS is what I get for not looking the truck over thoroughly before I paid for it.

hardware stores & Sears (maybe even halfway-decent auto parts stores).
Other than leaking fluids, my truck really hasn't caused me problems.
I don't know if the brakes count though, he said they needed to be bled, but he didn't tell me that the passenger caliper was beyond repair, and couldn't be bled.
